Title: Can't set "double Down" during clear ram
Post by: Jeff99 on March 05, 2010, 12:20:34 AM
When I set the machine up and am going down the choices by using the reset key on the right side of the machine it skips over "allow double down".  I lost my old clear chip and bought a new one.  Is this a problem with the clear chip and I need a different one?  I have assumed the clear ram chip is like the old IPL chips for mainframes, load the initial memory enough to get the machine going and nothing more.
Regards,
Jeff

what jurisdiction did you set it at?  try jurisdiction 1.  what are your other settings?

I would also suspect the jurisdiction settings. Number 1 is the best choice. if when you do a clear, and it is not available to change, it is locked and another set of mains will be needed. Remember GM owners that some jurisdictions will lock certain settings in and they can not be changed until eproms are changed.

Would pulling the mains and replacing them do the job, or would the machine have to be cleared with a completely different set? :103-

Yes, a saferam clear would be required, especially since they want to set the double down option.

Thanks,

Wayne, I'm not sure if you were answering my question or Jeff99, but in the case of my question, I was referring to tacman's statement that if certain jurisdiction choices had locked certain settings, that a saferam clear would not be enough to free them and that the mains would need swapping to clear the lockouts. Perhaps I misunderstood tacman's answer. :103-

I guess your question was either
a) if I change mains will this  cause the machine to boot into the settings like a saferam eeprom clear would?  answer = no
b) if I change the mains do I need to perform a ram clear?   answer= yes

:96-    I was answering both, it would need a clear, especially since you want to change the jurisdiction.

Thanks,
Wayne

I did do a clear and the jurisdictions are locked.  In the posts above it was said that unlocking it would require doing something with the "mains" .  What is a "main"?
Thanks,
Jeff :103-

In my experience you have to obtain another set of Main eproms for spots M0 & M1 on the board. Maybe someone else knows another trick and will chime in.

That's what I thought you were saying.
So my question still stands. Can simply removing the mains clear such a lock? Can removing the mains, inserting the clear chip and trying a clear with no mains, clear such a lock? Or does clearing the lock require a clear with a completely different set of mains?

And my ancillary question is, why would this be necessary?
My experience has been like Wayne's: Only a clear chip should be needed to change all of these settings, including the jurisdiction. :103-

Has anyone else come up against this problem? :128-

Ok, that makes sense.  Where would I go to get a new set?
Thanks,
Jeff

The problem is that I have not puposefully given a locked jurisdiction while setting up any of my machines and then tried a ram clear to see if this will undo it. I do have a set of mains that are already in a locked status and know when I inserted those, a ram clear will not unlock it and they have to be changed out. It is interesting because only the eeprom should store these settings, right (at least if you manually program a locked jurisdiction in)? So a ram clear should work, unless it is a set of mains like the ones I have. I would assume on the set I have since it is "locked" in the mains eproms, it will not allow changes. If you manually select a locked jurisdiction, would the eproms know to go to a specific format setting? Because of this, I do not believe it is possible to do a ram clear without the mains/graphics eproms installed. The clear chip probably references addresses, on the mains at least to perform the fuction. Course, I'm just taking a guess.  :103-

Tacman,
You think about what these chips do in the "wild" they ensure a machine is used according to state gaming commission rules and the last thing  they want or the casino is some tech changing something.  I suspect you would have to change out controlled chips and a simple clear would not be suffieicent.

I was following the thread on Eprom burners, is the one on ebay GQ-4x MUMALL for $95 the one people use?
Have a great weekend.

The GQ-4X has been popular with many of us. It is not a professional level device, but I have had no issues with it and recommend it for home enthusiasts. It would be interesting to compare the checksum of a locked set mains to the checksum of normal mains of the same release and see if there was any difference.

I have never encountered locked chips on a Bally before. In fact, I have noticed that Bally seems to be much looser in their implementation of security measures than other manufacturers of machines within a given time frame.

Ns thatI'm pretty sure New Jersey is one of the jurisdictions that used specific chips.  Bally makes thair mandtory changes in a timely manner just like the other gaming. Manufacturers.  There are many versions of mains released for each platform
