Title: Touch screen problem WMS 550
Post by: cruisepl on March 13, 2010, 02:54:55 PM
Storm last night took out the power in the area, when I fired up the machines this am I get a "no touchscreen response" I have made sure all boards and connections are tight. I tried using the buttons to make choices on the screen but when I choose touchscreen test the button goes gray but no action on the screen. Tried a RAM clear and now I am stuck on the RAM clear screen with a no touchscreen response tilit. I am unable to use the buttons to make any choices on the RAM screen and when I put the game chip back in I get a dark screen with incomplete clear tilt.

According to the manual that leaves me with either a bad interface on the IO board or a bad touch screen board and my questions are?

anything else it could possibly be?
where is the touch screen board located and how do I identify it?
What about the IO board any way to test the touch screen interface?

Storm left me with problems on two of my Dotmation machines also and I will post those in WMS Reels

UPDATE--- been trying whatever I can think of to get these machines up and running today

The 550 is still down but at least I know exactly what it takes to fix it.   I took the LCD out of my other 550 machine and finished clearing the RAM, setting everything up and such. The game will play once I clear a minor printer error. That being said It appears that I will be in the market for a new monitor. Might as well get an LCD

Still wonder where the touchscreen board is located if anyone can let me know. Is it in the cabinet or is it in the bracket/cage with the monitor?

Thanks again

J

I hate tackling a machine I am not familiar with .
but touch screens of all types I am ..

the touch screen is a 3m microtouch or a elo touch screen .

if its a 3m -micro touch follow the wires or thick white or blk wire off the touch screen itself !!

it will go to a ivory color square box that says 3m micro touch .. if while machine is running touch the screen with finger
the green light on touch screen controller should dim and brighten ..

if the green light is off check all connections to controller !!you may have toasted controller

3m-uses orange for + black for neg.
the 3m microtouch is fed 12 volts dc

grey wire is neutral on both --ground

if you have a ELO touch screen it is fed 5volts dc most likely yellow and black wire . it will respond the same as above

if the 3m is not in the white ivory colored case -at times they  have been taken out of there case and VELCRO ATTACHED
and are just a green colored card with plug from touch screen going into it .but still have green light on it .

it sounds like a full ram clear is needed at this point ?? but i dont work on williams ..
hope this info helps out

rocket

before condeming any part have someone with williams know how guide you through a ram clear

There is a microtouch controller with Wiliams Gaming on the frontof it attached to the side of the cage that the monitor is mounted in. Im sure this has to be bad because as I said earlier when I switched monitors everything works fine  now I just have to get the monitor far enough out of the cage to see the lights. I completed the RAM clear when I put the other monitor in so all I needed was a  little help pointing me in the direction of the touch screen controller.

Thanks for the direction

UPDATE... found the controller and saw the light (green one that is)  when I touch the screen the light does not dim or brighten it just stays the same. Does this also mean the  controller is toast?

I had this problem with one of my 550 monitors too, the "No Touch Screen Response"

I found that the Video Backplane Board was at fault, one of the molex connector pins had rusted over and broke.  Don't know if this has any similarity to your problem, but just throwing this out there since I had the same error at one point. (Thinking the storm may have blown out the backplane board?!?!)

I got a new video bp board and solved the problem right up, a very cheap and easy fix thankfully!

I would say it has to be in the wiring after the molex  that connects to the bottom of the monitor. Other thing I think it could be is the touch screen controller since the green light stays constant instead of dimming when I touch the screen.  I put a LCD from another WMS machine in and it worlked fine so the problem has to be within the monitor cage someplace.  Thanks for your suggestion though I will take another look.

The touch screen controller is usually inside the monitor housing
you can see it in this pic, the white box at the bottom left of the pic
it should have micro touch on it

Thanks Wes,
I found it. The trouble is that it is mounted to the side of my monitor housing and my houising fully surrounds the monitor except for the front of course. I need to play with it some more to figure if I can take at least the top off the housing so I can see better and have more room to work.  I can see the green light on the top opposite where the wires come in of the microtouch unit (is this the only light or are there more on the front?) so I know its getting power to it but as Rocket said earlier the light should dim and get brighter if I touch the screen which it does not. The monitor will come up and I can see the game behind the tilt message so I am pretty sure its the touchscreen controller that has gone bad. I also replaced the whole monitor housing with one from another WMS machine and everything worked fine, leading me to believe more that ever its the touchscreen controller. Anyone with further info on WMS can you please confirm?

I think by swapping out your compleat monitor assembly you have pretty much proved that its the touch screen
controller that's in trouble, I am not sure if they are a serviceable part, I've never taken one appart
if you remove it and check the part number one of the suppliers here might have a replacement
or check Happ at this link, http://www.happcontrols.com/monitors/49523800.htm

Thanks Wes  I emailed 3m after looking on the linked site from here to see what they say about a replacement. I'll post over in classifieds too. I was pretty sure this was the problem just wanted a second opinion K+ to you
