Title: Denom burning out LED's?
Post by: Magicslots on March 15, 2010, 12:05:49 PM
Since I just cant resist the chance to tinker with my toys, I wanted to put an led in the denom light on my Super Spin 7,
Jim at Bettorslots told me he had to quit using them because they were burning up qiuck and hot.  He believes its because
the denom light gets it's power through the VFD, and that might be an issue.  Anybody else had a similar problem or have a work-around
for this?  A bulb that lasts?  :103-  Eventually I plan to replace all the lights on the machine with leds, including the fluorescent bulbs.  :89-

I changed all my bulbs over to LEDs also. No problems at all. Just make sure you use the correct wattage. Its a 12v #73 bulb  I get mine from superbrightleds.com
When you change your fluorescents let me know who you got them from, part numbers, etc.  Thats an upgrade I am looking to do also.

Actually to clarify....I meant to say the BV green bezel back lit illumination.  I have burned up....smoking and sizzling..... a few of vac display boards trying them there.  Maybe it was the bulb type, although they were 12v.  I have received several machines coming in direct from the casino with them in there....so maybe just a fluke with the bulb type I was using?  Anyway....it was enough to scare me away from them.

No problem Jim, I have this strange penchant' to put all led's in my machine.  I like the looks better, they burn cooler, longer etc.
So I am just searching out some long term fixes for these items.  I am still looking for a denom led for my S+ too. But those are 6.3v  :71-

Be very careful what you use...
I've seen what appeared to be the correct voltage LEDs melt to a pulp of plastic mess. :60-
They are extremely dangerous if you don't have the correct ones in place.
Do your homework first or you won't have a home!

I just went and checked my log book and want to correct what I stated above.  In 2 cases I burned up the VFD by using the 12v bulb type in Denom legend area and in 1 case I burned it up by changing out to an LED in the BV area.  In my notes "cool....look at the smoke coming out of the machine".  In all three cases I changed out the bulbs with the machine turned ON.

Advice>  Always keep a log and Never do anything with the machine turned on....duh  :25-.  The 12v bulb will work fine, however, also in my notes "decided the single 12v LED is not attractive in this case as it creates a hot spot on the Denom legend".  So as a result in this case I stick with the incandescent #73 as the light pattern is more evenly spread.

I know that "Tilt" found a LED bulb type that is much better in this instance which I looked into and decided it was too pricey for my purposes.  I just sent him a PM requesting that he post a link to that bulb type.

The S+ takes a 6.3v  type 86   Look at BCSPinball.com for those

Here is a pic of one of my S2000 with green LEDs in the buttons. There is also a single LED behind the "multi-denomination"   You can see what Jim is talking about when he mentions the hot spot and wanting a more even light spread.

Here you go.  These work perfectly behind the denom sticker, a bit pricey though but if you gotta have them them you pay for them.

That's the one.  Note they are 14V for S2000s only. They are pricey, but do work well.  Happ has one too that looks good, but it's super pricey at $21.75.  Here's a link to Happs: http://www.happcontrols.com/lighting/70185000.htm

Here's a couple of photos before/during/after installation of one of the MCM Leds:

Wow, it look so much cleaner, remember , if you have 35, 40, or even 100 slot machines at home, and their all on at the same time, and you factor the bulb use vs. LED use, it adds up. If you have only a few machines, would not save you any money, but I like it because it looks more natural, cleaner, etc..

Yes, for sure they would save a little energy and although I really like them...for me I guess I have to draw the line somewhere....  :30- .   Average of 10 to 20 machines out a month....adding just that bulb to the mix adds as much as $140.  Does not sound like much maybe, but look at the scenario of already changing out 6 of the button bulbs on say 15 S2000's and 15 LED's on say 5 I-games.  That's an average monthly ouchy of over $300 already....LOL....just on bulbs !!!  :25-

I agree with Bunker, what an awesome little bulb.  I went back to using a regular bulb behind the denom sticker because I didn't like the looks of the LED bulbs beam in just one area.  This bulb really makes it look natural and something I might have to look into.  K+ for finding it and posting it and pictures. :3- :3-

I have used these LEDs in the denomination socket for a few years and love them. A little pricey if you have more than 6 to 8 machines.
