Here is a question for the "Techie" guys...

I have a Willem PCB3 That READS the "080/801" series, but if I try to program one it barfs
Anyone have good experiances with this programmer or should I buy a newer one?

I highly recommend the GQ-4X programmer available from MCUMall.
I have no problems with it and use it for all my programming needs.
If you decide to get it, pick up the "full" adapter kit with it so you can
do the M27c4002 chips for s2000's as well!
The total cost? Under $125 bucks.

I had an easypro 90b(USB) that was a great programmer for about a hundred bucks or so.  It did 27c801, 27c4002, and most others without adapters.  The software is pretty good too.

Well, I found the "Problem"

Seems the manual tells you to REMOVE the jumper for A19, it DOESNT tell you to jumper it to A1!!!  (Idiots)
The on board DC-DC converter sucks! fine for 5 or 6.2 volt applications, too weak for 12/21 and 25 volt apps.
So...you simply take a GOOD/REGULATED 12 volt power supply,disconnect the USB cable and run it that way.
First time...WHAMMO!!!  chip programs just fine now, verifies correctly.
Still going to buy another newer programmer, but if YOU own a Willem PCB-3 this is the problem with it...

    Kirk  this was my choice. Stat has a GQ-4X and it takes him 8 minutes to burn a 8 Meg chip, takes me a minute 20 seconds, and need no adapters for 40 pin chip, most but not all chips are auto identified. No jumpers, no dip switches, and no brainier to use!!

Buzz, that is not a fair comparison, as my laptop was clearly constructed with physical (hardware) bus limitations. I was not able to get any speed out of a Firewire 800 ExpressCard 54 card reader either and ended up returning it.  In addition, my USB data transfer rate is slower than average, especially when uploading from the computer to an external device of any kind.

Kirk, if you want to properly compare the GQ-4X speed, ask someone who doesn't have the hardware issues that I do to do an 8MB chip test for you.

Is the M27C4002 an 8mb chip? If so, it takes about a minute with the GQ-4X...
One minute isn't much time to even try to handle a label printer sticker for it...lol
I've tried to standardize my labels like:

Pretty all my copies are in this form.
I'm wondering how other guys are labeling theirs?

I use a EasyPro 90B I can't remember how fast it did a 27C4002 but I think it  was couple minutes.
My programmer and software can tell right away if there is a problem writing to the chip.
I have to erase 2 because it stopped after a few bytes on 2 of them.

The M27C4002 is actually a 4meg chip, but it is a 16bit chip as opposed to most of the chips which are 8bit chips. This makes them program very fast because they have double the data path or whatever they call it. This is why you need an adapter for the GQ4x and GQ3x and the pcb3 programmers for 16 bit chips like the 27C4002 a.k.a. 27C4096. I have the GQ4X and am very happy with it, but as Buzz mentioned it does not autodetect the chips, but you do not have to change any jumpers like the previous models used to. You just select your chip type in SW, and away you go! It is very fast as compared to the GQ3x and the PCB3 as the GQ4x is a true usb model, whereas the others are not usb except for the power. It does take some time to program 8 meg chips, but it is faster than the GQ3x and PCB3. For the price I think it is the best bang for your bucks. Just my opinion.

The GQ-2X, GQ-3X are USB for both power and programming.
I have one of the GQ-2X, it is put away in case I need it.
Some IC on mine has failed so it can no longer be powered by USB alone, I have to use a 12V 500ma power source with it.
The 3X eliminated the dip switches. the 4X changed to the 40 DIP socket and some other changes. 

I was just about ready to give up on my Willem Enhanced EPROM programming when I saw this post.
I've also had no luck programming 27c080's. When adding external power (12VDC) do I just use the
USB port and make an adapter?
Do I set the 'Special Chip' LED to W27C?
What Voltage LED 15V, 21V or 25V for the 27C080?
J3 jumper?

 Quick questions.. when u remove it from A19 I see various articles saying to jumper it on the pins to the left of it on 6 & 7 as shown here  http://www.mcumall.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=227  Also do i need to attach the 12V DC and unplug the USB as you mentioned.. Will the files I have already read using the previous settings need to be reread for a good copy of bin's? I removed the jumper and reburnt with the original files and it programmed and verified ok.. but the chips are not workin on my igame... I can be slow, so if you can give me a good detailed explination that would be awesome.. Is there an issue if I read with the default Willem instructions??? Again will my bin's need to be resaved??
