Title: My other hobbie is my life!
Post by: PWRSTROKE on October 24, 2008, 12:10:23 AM
Here is a few pics I took this morning.  This is a cab-off 04 ford "power stroke".  Catastrofic engine destruction.  I get at least one/two of these cab-off's a week  :37-.  Any other Ford senior/diesel tech's here?.  Sorry the pic's suck but the shop is dark and was at 6 am in the morning.  Gotta to love what you hate if you do what I do to have any sanity in life.  (I probably posted this under the wrong topic).  Thanks B.

Does the phrase "It sucks to be you" hold any special meaning? :72-
Actually my Dad is a mechanic. Sometimes I wonder how he does it.
I don't mind tinkering and do all my own work but as much as I cuss
even the simple tasks, I can only imagine what you got through with
one of THESE jobs. :25-

All the best,
Travis

PS: Just think, your birthday is coming. On a Friday even! You can
blow steam the WHOLE weekend...(spooky!)
PPS: Do the trick-or-treaters have to give YOU candy??? :97-

Those jobs do suck.  A cab-off 6.4 '08 model is even worse.  Over the years i have learned to have patience and perform the job at hand.  Could not say the same when I was younger doing this.  This is just some of the things we all do,  Imagine a heart surgeon etc.. Would be neat to open a new topic about our professions here but this works too.  I like seeing what my friends here do for living. (change of pace).  My b-day is on halloween but I have to get the kids going and it consumes the whole night!.  (Have 3- one 5yr old girl, one 8yr old girl one 19 yr old boy!).  Shoo I am turning 40 but feel maybey 50!.

When I had my Goldwings I did my own oil changes.
The 2001 and 2003 wing had a rear tire I could get off in under 5 minutes once I grabbed the breaker bar and 5-6mm allen wrench.

Those Cab-Off pictures made me think of the Terminators from the movies and now TV!   :97-

Pretty impressive..... Am I correct in assuming that it is more than 4 big bolts that you have to undo to peel it off like that????  :72-

Sorry Could not resist as you made it look easy in the pictures!  :25- :131-

Thanks for sharing more about your interests. That is why we made this site. A little bit of everything mixed in with slots and stuff!!!

Yeah,  4- bolts and about 4-6 hours later depending on after-market add-on's!.  Went in this morning an all hell broke loose.  Had some out-of-staters broke down and had to tear deep into another 6.0 liter.  Did not get back to that job until 2:45 pm.  Needless to say the customer is pissed as I was pulled from his job!.  That stuff happens every day. My motto with all that is just go with the flow and do the best u can!.

OK lets see F-O-R-D, Fix Or Repair Daily........Just kidding Barry, just had to say it. Please no hate mail
I was just kidding. :30- :125-

I know it takes quite a lot of knowledge to be a good senior diesel tech that's why you got pulled off your first job. I would also say "I have to do what the boss says".

Come on guys.  The chevy's durajunk and etc. is even worse.  Lets not get into Manufactor preverences here!.  Besides I am glad the 6.0 and 6.4's in my opinion are junk---It makes me money! :97-.  Shoot I didn't design them, just stuck fixing them.  Ford does make some very good products but those as before mentioned are not it!.  They run like a rapped ape -when they do run! :5-.  Everyone/customer I ever talked to wants the 7.3 pwrstroke back and I cannot blame them.  They were bullit proof and dependable.  They say it was gov./emissions thing that put them out but I beg to differ.  I think ford over the years knew that they had built something "too good" and folks just were not trading/buying new.  There is 7.3's out there still on the base block/heads, no rebuild with 800,000 miles on them.  That ought to tell you something there!. :89-

I drove a 1968 galaxy 500 (my fathers) with 250,000 miles on it back in 1986.
It was a 302. I got broadsided and pushed from the drivers side to the passenger side.
Given how those old seat belts worked (fixed belt) I would have been sliced in 3
Just like in that movie Ghost Ship had I been wearing one.

The insurance company wrote it off for $150.00

I pumped out the door with a 2x4 and a bottle jack and drove it around for the next 8mths climbing in and out of passenger door.
I don't know of any non-trucks with a bench seat anymore.

I then advertised a 302 engine in the paper for $1000.00 and when the guys who bought it heard that it was running they bought it on the spot without asking for a discount.
We drove it to the wreckers where they pulled the engine, I stripped off the rims and tires and sold off the rubber and wheel complete for $50 each. They were all-treads that had been studded for winter. Another thing you don't see anymore.

I also say that many companies do not build things to last anymore.
they figure lets design it to last for 1-2 years or so and the customer will have to buy another or repair it when it does break.

Remember the phones that we would get from the phone company those things were heavy, rarely broke, and if they did the telephone repairman could fix them on the spot.

I had try to post to this earlier but it did not take.  This is not my orginal post but but just to sum up as we all know they built things to last back then-aka dependabilty.  Some of the best cars ford made in the 90's were sleepers for durabilty-crown vic, escort etc.  damn good vehicles and still on the roads.  Yeah they all have their quirks but not bad on these for reliabilty.

I'm obviously a Mopar man but have always respected both of the other domestics.  I guess I just love all muscle cars.

I liked the pics.
Thanks,
Wayne

Yup, I respect that but you are not going to drive those every day to/from work or load the family up on a outting.  The muscle cars are great and have done that big time.  I will be building only one more before I croak just for kicks to dust these kids out here to show what an old man can do with "real horse pwr" V-8 vs jap 4 bangger nitrous etc.  Bring them on.   :89-
