Title: Dirty, dirty, nasty little coins!
Post by: mwade109 on April 03, 2010, 01:51:29 PM
Ok,  so this might not be exactly for this forum but was as close as I could find.  How did the casinos clean their quarters when the machines actually used coins?  I love my coin in/out machines to death but am tired of my hands getting nasty each time use them!  Now I know that in the casinos,  when it was coin in/out,  hands would get dirty from the coins but it would take quite a bit of playing for them to become nasty.  How did they do it and where the heck can I get a machine (if that's what they used)?

I REALLY don't want to hand wash them as each machine had 500-800 quarters in it and I have 8 machines.  Any ideas?

Take your pick of machines.

<edit> From little I have read a tumbler works better than ultrasonic on coins. Do your research, please.

This thread has some info on cleaning tokens:

http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?topic=2016.msg15021#msg15021 (http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?topic=2016.msg15021#msg15021)

I haven't cleaned any yet but I'm gonna try soaking in degreaser and then pouring the tokens with degreaser from one 5 gallon bucket to another 5 gallon bucket, back and forth.

I saw a commercial tumbler at Home Depot that is really used for mixing cement. Load ALL the coins in it and add some avairy grit from a pet store. Or you could used sandblasting plastic media in the tumbler. Anyway, after 24-48 hours of tumbling, they should come out like brand new.

I ran my quarters and Bellagio tokens through the dishwasher a couple times.  I don't think that worked very well cause my hands still got dirty.  Can you really ever clean them enough to not get your hands dirty and black?  I mean, they are coins and look what they are made of.

A friend of mine who deals in coins uses a common case tumbler (for ammo) with walnut hull media for the coarse cleaning then the ground corncob
media with some "Flitz" metal polish in it.  Shines em up really well.  I tried this trick on my dirty shell casings and they come out looking like new  :89-

This.

Go to the link posted by SlotMonkey. You'll see that's what I do, and there's no way to get them cleaner (unless they are made of or contain brass, and you like that special level of hell that is cleaning each coin/token by hand with Brasso...)

You could also use C L R but it will take a heck of a lot of time cleaning each one.

Well, i tried the quarters in my small rock tumbler and it burned off the little plastic pully therefore ticking me off enough to make a mega-tumbler! I will attach a picture of the prototype but for a good chuckle,  watch the link to the youtube video!  It was made out of some wood,  two conveyor belt rollers,  a sewing machine motor and a ceiling fan motor dimmer switch.  I used a apple juice container for two reasons,  1.  it has built in 'indents' to put two rubber pinball bumper bands on for traction and 2. it has a built in 'grip' that kinda acts like a washing machine agitator.  I run it for 15 minutes with a mixture of greased lightning and water and they are clean as anything.  A bit noisy tho.  watch the video,  you will see the 'money laundering' in action.

The video has 600 quarters being cleaned.

Really cool! I guess you are a fan of "wet" vs. "dry". The dry method is to use aviary grit or sandblasting media in the tumbler.

Excellent job. Where did you get your hands on the conveyor belt rollers?

Ya' know, as long as you're using an apple juice bottle, you can put the thing in the refrigerator when you're done; then when you pick up some coins to play, you say that you've got plenty of good, clean, cold, hard cash in hand. :56- :244-    :200-  :200-

What.... don't everyone have conveyor rollers laying around the house???  Really though,  before by Wife passed away about 10 years ago, (RIP Robin), she had bought some of these on eBay for some project she was going to work on.  She was a 'crafty' one so I have no idea what she bought them for but shipping musta been highl as that box is heavy! This is the first time I came across any use for them and because I am not one to throw anything away,  there they were.  So kids,  remember, never throw away anything as you will use it some day!

Excellent job. Where did you get your hands on the conveyor belt rollers?

If anyone does any wood working, they probably have a few of these laying around. I don't remember where it was, but I saw just the rollers somewhere. These are like $15 at Harbor Freight if you have one in your area. Less if you use one of the 20% off coupons readily available. Probably can rig something up using the stands as is, and still have them for woodworking.
