Title: 2 Q's, Reel Glass harder to find? and way to "de-yellow" bottom display
Post by: Johnny K on April 06, 2010, 01:00:45 AM
See attached picture.

- Will I have a hard time finding kits with the setup of the reel glass with credits, etc display on the right hand side.. most I see are for BV units wiht the numbers left/righ of the denomination sticker?? (No bv on this one)

- Is there a easy way to "de-yellow"/clean the bottom part so it's whiter like the rest of the machine.. I assume it's realted to the plastic light deflector (for lack of a better description) that is rivited on there..

Thanks,

Johnny K

I'd just never change the reel glass, other wise any round top kit will work. As far as the yellowing there's nothing you can do for it. It comes from the denom light staying lit forever and it gradually burns the plastic reflector, and most of the time the light bulb is glowing yellow. The only option is replacing it.

The simple answer at least for me is no...I use orange oil cleaner on the backs of the belly glass to clean off the Casino "smokers smutz"
with a soft rag.  It took me multiple tries to get my RWB glass cleaner. They do yellow some with age. Don't use windex or ammonia based cleaners!
Clean the fluorescent tube and reflector as well.  The button legends will have to be replaced to get them looking decent.  Several of the fine
vendors here can probably fix you up there.  John at Rudysdeals.com has some of the older reel glass I think. :103-
Good luck and let us know how it comes out.

oh he was talking about the belly glass.. l was thinking along the lines of denom display. In the past I've used dawn dish washing liquid, works great on cars too, to clean the nicotine off the backing of glass. Also while you're down there check the belly bulb to make sure it's the right one. Someone may have swapped it out with the wrong bulb before you got the machine.

Thanks for the advice.  I think the glass is OK, but a good cleaning can't hurt.  And I'll clean the deflector and check the bulb (compare against the one on top).  I suspect the plastic on the deflector has yellowed and that's the biggest culprit..  Didn't know if anyone had luck spray painting or replacing them to get a cleaner look.

I can live with the switches, although I've seen some people use LEDs for a really white look there.

Thanks for the input.

JK

I was thinking a white to get the reflector closer to original.  We'll see what it looks like after cleaning.  Held on with rivets, could make it harder than needed... Otherwise, I'm sure they sell larger sheets of either white contact paper or sticker "like" paper.. assuming heat isn't an issue..  May get lucky with the cleaning.  I know the outside had a bunch of nicotine on it.... went though quite a few paper towels cleaning it..lol

Using a florescent bulb with a higher Kelvin temperature can also help reduce the yellowing effect. Try a daylight bulb (6,000K - 7,000K), or if that seems too harsh, try to find a cool white bulb in the 4,500K - 5,500K range.
