Title: S2000 wobbling 2 inch reels
Post by: Buzz on April 09, 2010, 03:59:49 PM
Long story but here goes. I made a stop and brought back from AZ 3 five reel S2000 of the 15 total reels 10 were just junk I mean really worn out. Now being a Okie at heart and having Capt (up to his ass in tax papers) Happy's machine for a Guinea Pig this is the fix I did.

Remove reel basket from stepper motor ( mark basket and stepper motor shaft for when you reinstall )

On the stepper motor cross shaft you will see two small square plastic ( I'm going to call them drive blocks ) these blocks are the parts that are worn out

I took a Q tip and coated the inside of the basket ( where the drive blocks go )  with petroleum jelly ( also coated stepper shaft where it goes through the basket )

I then took RTV Silicone gasket maker (can be bought in just about any store you go in Auto Section ) and coated the cross shaft and the drive blocks with the silicone. I also coated the hole in the basket the stepper shaft goes through, but I don't think that step was needed.

Now just reassemble  It's a Bitch to get the basket down over the drive blocks. If you don't have it lined up perfect the blocks will turn on the cross shaft.

Now my reasoning for the Petroleum Jelly was,  it should keep the Silicone from sticking to the basket and stepper shaft. If I'm wrong and it does stick to the basket it will make future removeables difficult, But you know what I started with JUNK that needed to be replaced anyway.  I think if you could find a real FAT O ring and use it in place of the drive block would work or make a drive block out of rubber. Hard plastic was not a very good idea someone came up with!!

K+ to you Buzz.  I have not turned on the games here yet because everyone is still sleeping but I will let you know how it turned out.  It worked last night before I shut the games off to let that stuff dry.

That is something to mention too maybe??  After doing all the reels, let the silicone gasket stuff dry for a few hours, maybe overnight.  This way the stuff doesn't get smeared all over from the spinning reel when it's wet.

You smell that rubber silicone burning on the hot fluorescent lights yet?  :96-

I think it's a great fix providing you let everything sit and dry for a day.

Bunker  It just happened, but I used High Temp silicone and I waited about  humm how long does it take a S2000 to boot up? That's how long I waited !!  But not what I recommend.  :208-

I remember getting neoprene rubber from a large office supply store, they use it for squeegees blades or something. This is much more sturdy than a regular rubber and if I remember correctly it was available in different widths. It worked very well for the application I used it for and may work for making the blocks.

I remember reading that with the regular sized reels you could put black tape on the stem.  Can you do this with the 2" reels too?

Or duct tape? Wouldn't it be easier to pop a blue pill?

Much  It's not the shaft going through basket that's worn, it is the part I called the drive blocks that need help. After I started this post I went in and tore apart a bonus reel from a S 2000 4 reel machine, looks just like a reel from a 5 reel machine. First Pic. is stepper motor shaft without drive blocks, second Pic with blocks

Holy Crap!
They're made outta plastic?
How dumb is that?
Are they really needed to spin the reels?
Wouldn't the pin be sufficient enough?
I've never seen those.

No wonder you used silicone...I would have too.

Yea they are plastic.  It's kind of crazy how this was designed.  When Buzz took  one apart it had lots of plasticy gritt all over from the plastic blocks grinding against the basket where thay are all held together.  This little project has worked well.  We have only had two little problems since fixing these.  Two bulbs that weren't out, went out so I had bulbs to replace again.   :25- :25-  As far as the reels go they are working great with very little wabble. :131- :131-

Thanks again for the help Buzz.  I gotta give K+ to you again.

If your trying to stabalize the reel baskets have you tried ring stabilizers. In the past I have and still do work on S+ and S2000 and they work fairly well. I think the grease or jelly or what ever you used is a good idea just not in large quantities.

It would be very good if you could post a picture up here of one of these "Ring Stabilizers"...
I've never seen or heard of these... :129-
Buzz used silicone...which hardens to a rubber-like consistency.
