Title: Spectrum Dual Display Led's Dimming???
Post by: Magicslots on April 16, 2010, 01:56:16 AM
I converted my S+ to $.05 the other day and set up the progressive tonight.  I noticed while doing the setup that the
led's are dropping about 30+ percent in brightness after about 20-25 minutes.  The progressive still functions correctly, just dims.
Is this a sign the power supply is going bad?  :8-
Is the led boards?  :37-  I realize these are used displays with ???unknown number of hours on them???
but I would hate for this to crash and burn on me. Any suggestions on what to check?   :103-

Sounds like something is going on inside the power supply box when it warms up.
Do you have a spare power supply box?
I'd try swapping it to rule out bad display driver boards.

I've got one that does the exact same thing. Check the harness where it plugs into the power supply.

One a' these days I'm going to find a replacement for the 2 pins that overheated and replace them... :5- :60-

Nope, no  extra anything...its the only one I own, guess I will have to hunt down some spare parts  :7-

Just checked all the power plugs, no signs of corrosion or overheating that I can see

The guys at mouser.com will send you what ever you need to replace those pins.

I checked the power supply where it plugs into the display boards, 12.01 volts on cold power up, after a few minutes, (now only about 3) the leds dimmed.
Voltage drop was only to 11.97/11.98 volts.  :50-  :50-  Surely that is not enough drop to dim the displays?  :103-
Can I assume its the display boards going bad??  :37-

It's almost like you need another complete working set
to swap stuff and see what's bad and what's good.

Hmmm, do you have an o'scope? Check for AC waveform on top of the DC getting bigger as it gets warm. If so, check your rectifier diodes in the power supply...

:8- Nope, no O'scope, besides, I haven't tinkered with one of those in years  :96-  I'll check around and see if I can find someone with one to borrow...

Any suggestions on what to check/how on the display boards?  :103-
