Hi there Hutch & welcome to NLG.

I'm sure we can help you with your Dads new toy.  Those Bally E-2000 series machines are popular and a working machine in nice & shiny condition can be worth several hundreds.  The 71 error code should not be too expensive to fix either.  And it just so happens there is a manual for you in the Submit New File section of the web site.  When you look through it you will see that an 71 error code is caused by a bad No. 1 reel reader.  This will be a good opportunity for you to get acquainted with your Dads machines.  Take a close look at your reels and if you are lucky you may see an obvious problem in the wiring, the bulbs, or the reader circuit boards.

Good luck,
Mark

Just picked up one of these machines myself. And before u buy anything try this. Pull the reel mech. Out of the machine. Look on the back of the mech. The three arms behind the reels. The index levers these start and stop the reels. Make sure everything connected to these arms moves freely springs levers. And all the shafts they ride on mine was gunked up with old grease and slowing the reels giving a code 71. I being careful not to get any on reels or reel board. Sprayed all moving parts and worked everything loose.then put the mech. Back in and shut the door put a coin in and it will clear the 71.  Machine worked like a charm after that.I would try this first. Could save you some money and time. Hope this helps in getting machine going.
