Title: Jennings J-400 payout
Post by: galahad on November 02, 2008, 04:41:41 PM
Finally got machine to start paying out with the respective emblems showing. Before it would just spit out randomly. Had a spare machine and swapped two chips now machine starts to pay out with every match, but the coin count is wrong. Hopper runs and throws out coins ok, limit sw is alright( checked for continuity when activated), wiring is good to board but not sure which board takes over from here. The board on the back of machine, or the main board? Also not registering on display on front door. I know I'm taking a shot in the dark, hope to have manual coming this week. So I thought I'd check here for any ideas, or do I just need some board work? Thanks!

I have schematics for the J400. There are actually two versions of the main PCB, one for multi-line and one for single line multi-coin, but I don't know how you tell them apart just by looking. There are also non-standard payout versions of the multi-coin, not documented, which I believe are made by cutting PCB tracks.

I've done about six of these machines and the main PCB is terribly unreliable. It would take days to trouble-shoot and fix a problem, then a few days later something else would go wrong. In the end I gave up on it and designed my own version of the J400 control board.

Are your boards for sale? I have both, a multi-line, and a single line. Right now just toying with the single line.
don't know much about this, have been doing pinball for about two years now and I got these in on a trade. So really just learning. I have schematics coming this week. I know there old machines and not much to talk about, but is a good learning experience. LMK if boards are available, will probably go that route if I don't get this thing going. Thanks! Jim!

I do have some spare boards, yes. Changing between multi-line and single line is done with jumpers, so the same board does for both. Non-standard payouts is easily taken care of in the software. I added a couple of helpful extras - a diagnostic mode, where you can inspect and exercise all the inputs and outputs, and an LCD driver for a replacement front panel display if required. This could be used to turn it into a credit play machine, though I haven't written that part of the software yet. I just did enough for my own needs, to get my machines running.

Very impressive! Way out of my league! If you get to the point and start marketing these give me a shout. Right now I'll have to stay with the limited knowledge I have on these, wait for my schematics to come and then say 3-Hail Mary's! Thanks for in the input! Jim!
