Title: S 2000 Post by: Buzz on June 11, 2010, 11:28:35 PM I being pretty new to S 2000s I want to ask a question, every MPU I remove from a machine shows heat marks on the upper edge of the tray. I can't recall reading about a lot of board failures, but to me it looks like we are putting the board into a little oven. I have always heard that heat was the number one killer of electronics. I can't see any place to mount a fan of any size, I have been turning over the idea of drilling some vent holes in the upper tray and housing. I'm open to any ideas, the one that comes to mind is if it's not broke don't fix it. :25- :25- :25-

Metal shavings don't do electronics much good either, so if you drill any holes be careful and make sure to get everything cleaned up well! The heat marks you see is most likely cigarette tar, at least that's what I've found with mine. Some simple green, mean green, or something like that will probably clean it right off. Anyhow, I think if the MPU needed additional cooling IGT would have put vent holes there or a fan on it (like they did with video steppers). Best bet in my opinion is to leave it alone and make sure the cooling they did put in place (fan on top) works and is clean. |
