Title: How much RAM
Post by: DorothyMacaw on September 05, 2010, 12:13:29 PM
Hello Again

I've been told that I need 32mb of RAM in my Vision to accommodate the RFA25 upgrade. How can I tell how much RAM is on board? Also, there are 2 RAM slots, will the Vision work with only 1 slot filled or will I need to have both slots filled?

On the left side of the picture you posted is a SIMM plugged into a socket.

Can you post a close up picture of it? Also, what does it say on the label?

I think these are the numbers. My eyes are getting older and my Nikon can't get closer.

You need 48mb Ram, 32 in one slot and 16 in the other for Ms LGM BGM, you can look at the Vision Display when Booting to see what you have now without dissasembly, if you have a total of 16mb now with 2 sticks you will need 1 16 to go with the 32, btw 48mb is the max on the vision display, below is quoted from the BGM143 PSR

Program Summary Report: Bonus Game Module BGM00143
BONUS GAME THEME
Ms. Little Green Men Three-Reel.
VISION SLOT PROGRAM COMPATIBILITY
Flash Card Driver ATA10053 and its replacements.
Flash Card Size 40 MB.
NOTE: This game requires 48MB of DRAM.

It's close enough to read, but for future reference, you had your zoom lens set at the widest angle (18mm). Next time, zoom all the way in to 70mm, even if you have to step back a bit to find the closest focus. You'll end up with a tighter shot.

OK...

Here's a way to tell how much RAM is on a 72 pin SIMM. It works for about 2/3rds of the SIMMs out there...

If the chips have a space inbetween the pins on each side then count the pins in groups. If it's two groups of 5 then 8 of those will give you 4Mb RAM. If it's in two groups of 6 pins then 8 of those will give you 16Mb RAM on the SIMM.

If the SIMM has 8 chips on each side then double it... 8 or 32Mb of RAM.

If it has 9 or 12 chips on each side or 8 on one side and 4 on the other then it's a parity SIMM...

WOW !! So much information.

Thank you all.

Bunker - Young eyes, quit showing off !!

Stat - Thanks for the photo tip, I've got to learn more about my camera.

BlueRidge - your post surprised me, I didn't know that you could use unbalance RAM =amounts in the two slots. On computers the memory slots must have the same size RAM in both slots. Interesting. ---- Your BTW about the key chip is a lifesaver.

In fact on computers you can mix and match ram depending on the motherboard and what version of windows you are running. On most motherboards you can mix and match speeds of ram, but they will not run at their potential due to the slower of the ram. Also, it depends if you are using dual channel  ram or single channel, some motherboards accept only one or the other. The best way is to check out the specs of the computer on the manufacurers website. Dual = both must be the same, single you can mix and match as to have a 512mb and a 1gig. Motherboards do have a max. of ram that they adhere to.

Dual channel Mobos can use different size DIMMS, but they'll default to single channel mode if different sizes are used. When the same size DIMMs are used, they will run dual channel mode.
