Title: Restoring IGT 701 Fortune 1 Draw Poker Machine, need parts/advice
Post by: sardox on September 26, 2010, 11:44:49 AM
Hello!
I'm restoring a Fortune 1, and have a few questions regarding it.
The machine is functional, but has some minor issues.
The coin diverter solenoid always remains energized, so
to keep it from burning itself out, i've removed the
120v wire from it and taped it, and removed the spring
to keep the diverter plate in the correct place to send
the coins into the hopper rather than the chute. Now
it's not critical unless the hopper gets overfilled, but
just the same, I'd like to fix it and get the machine
operating as it should. I've read that it's most likely
a bad chip on the board (f6) but I don't have a
service manual to locate the chip on the board.
If someone could help me find a user manual, and/or
give me information on this problem, I would be
grateful.
Another problem I've had is locating switches for this
machine. I could use a few of the button sockets,
and some buttons, like 5 "HOLD" buttons,
a "DRAW" button, and a "DEAL" button.
On ebay I've found a vendor selling other buttons,
but not these, just "HOLD/CANCEL" which doesn't
pertain to this machine... I'd love to find a newish
looking button set for this machine, as the one on
it is functional, but badly worn/ugly.
I'm also looking for a speaker for it that actually
fits. stud spacing is 3.25" square pattern.
And finally, there is a plug in the back right corner
to the right of the transformers that doesn't plug
into anything. I think it's a 6-pin molex.
Does anyone know what this is for?

Thanks so much for helping this noob out!

Welcome to the site, Todd.

I don't know a ton about Fortune 1s (other than having played a couple of them) so I'm not going to be much help, but I did want to extend a warm welcome to  :nlg- -- you've found a great site here and hopefully some of the other members will be able to help you in your quest.

For what it's worth, I think it will be difficult for you to find newer buttons that don't say "hold/cancel" or "hold/discard", as IGT did away with having a separate cancel button with (I think) the Fortune II (certainly by the PE they were hold/unhold) -- as such, most buttons in demand today are the hold/cancel variety.  That said, you could probably get a set of newer buttons and create your own legends for them.  The classifieds section of our forum would be the best place to post "wanted to buy" type messages, as the vendors who frequent the site always look there, but don't always see every post in every topic.

Some pictures of your machine -- in particular, the mystery harness -- might be helpful to the folks here.

Welcome again.

I took a quick look at a couple of Fortune 1s that I have and didn't see any extra plug. I think you said the machine is functional, it's not uncommon to find extra plugs inside a slot machine.

   Welcome to our happy forum.

the six pin connector could be for the sound board, they didn't work very well so most of them were removed, they were located underneath the shelf that supports the monitor.
the lockout coil problem: signal comes from the main logic board pin 11. the output from pin 5 of E6 (H11A1), it goes to the interface board (on the bottom left side of cabinet) connector A pin 5  to R9 (10k ohm resistor) to base of Q-5 (2N3906) which controls the relay K-6 which puts 117 vac thru Q-7 (Q400E3) to the lockout coil.

I doubt that you will find new switches, check with the vendors listed on the top of the page. they were flush mounted, doesn't mean you can't replace with newer type elevated switches.

hope this helps  (the board is laid out in a letter versus number grid.  the letters start from the front side of board first row of chips are row A, second row B etc. (A through I)  numbers start from the left side,  (1 to 16 )

Thanks for all the info, guys!
I haven't even gotten to the diverter problem yet, and I'm already in a pickle.

I went to work on the draw switch, which was giving me problems with intermittent
contact on A & B (light) and I sprayed some contact cleaner into it and it popped apart.
It seems someone had glued it together and it was full of cracks from 20+ years
of abuse. I attempted to superglue it back together, and failed miserably. I got
superglue into the switch area and when I attempted to free the slide,
the socket literally crumbled in my fingers. It's an Electro-Mech 65-ELCS-350
switch, and I've been hunting high and low to find a replacement.
I contacted Electro-Mech directly, but they only have one switch in stock
which costs 25.70 each, but they have a $100 minimum order for stock
parts! They don't expect any more for another 6 weeks, and I'm certainly
not going to pay 100 bucks for a single switch. Madness...
I can't remember where, but I saw a vendor somewhere selling them
for around 32 bucks each. I've combed my browser history
looking for it, but am still coming up empty. I remember it being listed
under "Bally parts" on someone's website. If you guys know of a source
for these switches or have one or more collecting dust, please contact
me. In the meantime, I will place a wanted ad in the appropriate place
to see if anyone responds.

Special thanks to Buzz for the 'file' he sent. You're a lifesaver, brother!

When I'm done with this machine (if I don't destroy it in the process),
I'll definitely post some pics for you guys.

Thanks again for the warm welcome and help!
Todd

Someone on another forum just posted a picture of a Fortune I at the Eastside Cannery in Las Vegas.  It looks like they used some newer buttons on the cabinet with perhaps self-printed legends:

Thanks Buzz. I remember I bought a similar looking board by mistake.
I'm still going to try and find it to figure out what it is.
Finding it is the real challenge.

Hey.. what kind of battery does the Fortune one use?. It's been twenty years since I worked on thse things. Almost as bad as a bally 4 card rack.. Also what color are the coin switch wires.? Someone took the whole coin in assembly and clipped wires.. Thanks for any help..

Mike, the battery is an Eveready 523, 4.5V Alkaline.

The coin switch is a momentary SPDT.
wire colors are:

Common: yellow
N.O.: brown
N.C. orange

Hope this helps.
