Title: Flying into Vegas...heading to Laughlin
Post by: Yoeddy1 on October 14, 2010, 05:56:49 PM
Sometime next month.  Never been to Laughlin.  Staying at the Tropicana Express...rooms will be free.  Where are the good spots to go for food and winning $?   :88-

Thanks,
Jason

I was down there last Easter - Stopped in at Harrahs Buffet about 7.00pm - worst food I have eaten in 20years (Harrahs in Vegas is consistantly good).

May I suggest Olive Garden on the other side of the river in Bull Head City.

Jason  I just got back from Laughlin/bullhead yesterday. In my opinion if Joey moved away from Bullhead I would never go back to Laughlin again. You will find 8 or 9 Casinos each one of them their claim to fame is each has a swimming pool. BFD  If you've been in one casino you've been in them all.

I have been to the buffet at the Tropicana, I thought it was pretty damn good, ( what made it outstanding was Capt. Happy picked up the check)   :244- :244- :244- Yesterday I ask Dottie ( Joey's mother in law) about the different buffet's, she said the Aquarius was the best one. This last trip I ate at the Edgewater buffet, it didn't make me sick. ( The sign on the Prim rib said roast beef )  I do recomend you go to In-n-out Burger ( Northside of the Tropican parking lot) I must warn you, if your not in the mood for a hamburger, go someplace else, all they have on the menu is hamburgers.

Don Laughlins Riverside has an antique slot machine store. In there they sell newer (1990's) video pokers, S2000's, etc. Always fun to checkout what they have.
The Aquarius has a lot of newer machines to play including the AVP GameKings. Nice!
Edgewater & Colorado Belle are very average.
The Pioneer is old school. IGT S+'s that take and give coin and quite a bit of video poker.
Golden Nugget has a nice assortment of machines. (I won $1200+ there on a Bally's five reeler! ) :89-
The River Palms is average too, but a small step up from Edgewater/Belle.
Harrah's video poker pay tables had me heading for the exits.

The Tropicana has a nice assortment of machines too.

Have Fun!

We love going to Laughlin. And we usually stay at the Tropicana as well. (We get free rooms too  :3- )
It's close to home, NLG is on the way when we go through Bullhead. I like the fact that we can walk to almost all of the casinos.
We don't gamble much, So I spend most of the time dragging my wife around to look at all the machines & topers that
I am going to get someday. She is really a good sport about it, Ok honey, Thats a nice one, So is that one, ETC ETC...  Now, let's go to dinner  :96-

Here are a couple of pics of the view from the Tropicana!

There's In N Out burgers in the middle of pic 2859 !

Chances are good that you'll be the youngest person in the city of Laughlin.  That is, assuming you're under the age of 85.

I assume you're planning a stop in at the NLG World Headquarters?

Jason,

I added one word to Uniman's opinion of the Edgewater/Belle, :5- although I found some very good 25¢ Triple Double Bonus VP paytables at the Edgewater last year. The Edgewater is slightly better than the Belle, IMO.

Don't forget to check out the antique auto museum at the Riverside. :71- As has been mentioned, they also have the antique slot store, but from what I've seen, they are not only extremely overpriced, they are extremely overpriced reproductions. It's a nice place to browse, but keep your wallet in your pocket.

If you're a good blackjack player, the Golden Nugget has one single-deck table with decent rules*  that is often uncrowded mid-week (meaning that you can actually get more than two hands per shuffle.) The table is usually set as their "high limit" table  -- which for Laughlin is a joke -- with a minimum bet of a whopping $10. :30-

* Pays 3:2; dbl down on any two cards; dealer hits soft 17; no dbl after split (obviously on single deck); no surrender; penetration is usually good with one to three players.

If you really want to be daring, you could double down on a soft 19, or split 10s against a dealer's 6.  Both plays are correct at certain times, but the first will get you some scrutiny by the dealer and pit boss, and the second will likely get you killed by the other players.

Of course, splitting those 10's at the right time can be a great way to convince everyone you're a fool while actually making a good play, and doing it at the wrong time is the fastest way to prove them correct. :47-

Back on track for Jason! (BTW Let me know when you know when you are going to go)

Plus I have wanted to share this for everyone since back in July......

I really suggest going to the cafe/coffee shop/restaurant/whatever they call it in Don Laughlin's Riverside Hotel Casino. My Mom and I tried it a couple (or few?) times on the last trip for the NLG 4th of July Celebration and then some. We never had a bad meal, and the prices were very very reasonable the the food was pretty good based on what we got, and from looking at what other people got.

The first visit I got a French Dip, and my Mom got the Ham Steak Special. She was shocked when it arrived as we had NEVER seen such a huge Ham Steak served at a restaurant before, it was probably easily more than a pound, and tasty! :91- :91- :91-

I had eyed a Hamburger on the menu, and decided to save it for another visit. I attached the menu description to this post, and you will get to see it on the next couple posts!!!

Ok here is the burger from our next visit.... I decided to go for it as I was hungry. Also the waitress told me that their policy is that if you eat the ENTIRE thing, plus the fries (or maybe not... I forget, CRS!!!) ( :29- Not a small portion either!) that it would be FREE!!!!! :150- :150- :150- I was up for the challenge as an adventure, and for a story for the NLG folks!!!! She said that I was allowed to leave one item off of the burger, and since I do not like tomato slices, I had her put them on the side for my Mom... It might have been a whole tomato, I think it was like 10 slices...... look in the pictures! :99-

I like cheese so I added that for an extra buck.....  :81- Whoa that sure broke the budget...  :97- :97- :97- NOT!!! :89- :71- :89-

Prepare your eyes...........

I now think that this should be an open challenge to all members...
Go try, and make sure to take pictures :211- of how far you got... My estimate is that I only ate 3/8! We could then start a thread just for those posts!??? :103- :79- :103-

That...is...AWESOME CH!  I attempted something like that a few years ago.  1 1/2 pound burger, a huge plate of fries and a monster milkshake.  You eat it, it's free.  I had to pay for it.  I was sick the rest of the day, but I gave it an honest attempt.   I'll let you gents know when I'm comin.

PFChangs menu prices are pretty much the same US wide. The one in the Planet Hollywood ( is slightly more expensive I noticed) but the road directly behind Harrahs / PH / etc has another on it. With the regular prices. Vegas prices get way more reasonable anytime you leave the strip.

I miss the quality and variety of food in the Bay Area more than anything. There was never any reason to go to a chain restaurant since they all paled in comparison to the independents.

I had to abstain from Thai, Vietnamese, Italian, and even Chinese cuisine for a while after moving away because all of the places I tried sucked. L.A has good Japanese Sushi and Indian restaurants, but good Thai was hard to find and great Pizza was impossible. Since leaving L.A., it's only gotten worse. I've finally gotten used to "Panda Express" and have found a few two-star Thai restaurants, but nothing beats the local places in the Bay Area.

We used to go play in Holly Park sometimes, back when it was safe for kids to walk around...

And the "hippie house" around the corner from our house was where all the neighborhood kids would go tie-dye t shirts, make pottery pieces and Gods Eyes, while the hippies that lived there tripped their balls off on acid and shrooms.

That city sure hasn't changed much. :72- :72- :72- :72-

You got me reminiscing and I looked up the Coronet theater on Google maps this evening, only to find out that it closed in 2005 and was demolished for a senior care facility.

I saw Star Wars there exactly one week after it opened on Wednesday June 1, 1977 and will never forget the experience.

The theater was huge, right up until it closed in 2005: they never subdivided it. It held somewhere around 1300 people, and we waited in the short line for a couple of hours just to buy the tickets, and then camped out in the LONG line snaking around the gas station and up the block for several more hours waiting to actually get in. Nothing could compare with viewing Star Wars on that giant screen with sound coming from all over the theater, or the experience of hearing over 1000 people booing Darth Vader when he first appeared in the doorway of the rebel ship, or cheering the first time we all saw the hyperspace jump!!

It wasn't until much later that I found out how lucky we were, since it was one of only a small handful of theaters in the country to show the film in 70mm 6-track Dolby surround sound, and one of only seven theaters to do so for the May 25th opening (four in California, one in New Jersey, and two in New York.)
