Title: Dollar Tokens versus Eisenhower Dollars in Bally E-2090
Post by: czsm on September 16, 2011, 05:44:34 PM
I just got my Bally E-2090 slot machine, that I picked up at a bargain price (I think), running thanks to Barry at Foxslots (missing mpu board, eproms).  Thanks Barry!

It's a $1 machine that came with 8 tokens (1993) from the Luxor.  My questions are about using real Eisenhower dollar coins versus getting more tokens.

1) Are the Eisenhower dollars interchangeable with the tokens for use in the same machine?

2) Pros/Cons of using either?

3) Where can I get similar dollar tokens from (Eisenhower dollar size and weight)?  (I've found some bulk Eisenhower dollars for about a 19% premium over face value on the internet)

4) Is it possible to change to other dollar coins and what it take to do that?

Assuming your machine has an electronic coin comparator, it's pretty much as easy as replacing the sample coin. But you can't mix and match. They all need to be the same type.

The biggest con of using Eisenhowers is probably the cost.

If you change to other dollars (i.e. the smaller ones), you 'may' need a different pinwheel/shelf wheel for your hopper.

But I don't know enough about Ballys to have all of the answers.

It's a mechanical coin comparator.  Just a thin box that is designed to pop out with a solenoid mounted to the RH side of where the box pops in.

Oh. There was just a thread about a similar machine yesterday and the CC

Update....Just replying to my own post in case others might find this information useful...Got some Eisenhower $1 coins to test....

1) The coins are absolutely interchangeable with the old Luxor casino tokens the machine had in it.  The Ike's work perfect in this Bally E-Series machine.

2) I debated which way to go (buying tokens versus real "Ike's") but in the end the cost for the tokens (at least what I could find) were as much or more than real $1 coins.  The real coins (circulated) seem to go for around a 19-20% premium over face value, including freight.  With the real coins, the advantage is that it's real money that I can redeem/sell anytime I want.   I could also buy in smaller quantities than I could find with tokens.  Of course the down side is that $1 coins are more likely to disappear than tokens because of their value.  I suppose it makes a difference on who you let have access to your slot machine :-).

3) If I could have found tokens that were inexpensive compaired to real coins, I would have gone the other way.  Never got any reply from the forum on this one.  Maybe this area is the wrong place to post this question?  Maybe the Coin Comparitor area?

4) Never got any experts to respond to this question.

I sort of answered earlier, but you did not say what you meant by 'other dollars'. Smaller dollars would most likely require some different parts for coin-in and the hopper. They do for an IGT, so it would only make sense it would hold true for other machine too.

Thx Poppo. It does look like a lot of work and is the same as it would be to convert it to any other coin (quarters, nickels,...).

On a follow up note......I was able to go down to my local Wells Fargo branch and get them to order up some real Ike's without any problem!!  They do have a minimum order of "1000" of any special order they make (ouch), but you can immediately hand them back as many as you don't want when they arrive.  :95-

did you actually get them already, let me know if you do and ill open an account there, i had previously called the fereral reserve and they said all ikes are basically being recalled and banks are no longer allowed to order them

No, just ordered them.  Sounds like I might be getting a call from them informing me that they couldn't get them  :37-

Its a little branch office of Wells Fargo in a very small "Hill Country" central Texas town.  They always go out of there way to do things for there customers, as all the employees are locals that know every one in town.

I'll make a point of posting an updated on whether I get them or not.  The response you got was either accurate or just an excuse to make the customer and the problem "go away".  I'll cross my fingers and hope it was the latter, not the former ;-)

From the Fereral Reserve FAQ

Quote
Q:How can I obtain an Eisenhower dollar?

A: Most Eisenhower dollars are in circulation. The U.S. Mint discontinued minting Eisenhower dollars in December 1978, and the last of the Eisenhower dollars were distributed to the Federal Reserve Banks in April 1979. Because the Eisenhower dollars are no longer minted, the Reserve Banks cannot order them from the U.S. Mint and supply them to banks. Coin dealers listed in the telephone yellow pages usually have a supply of Eisenhower dollars.

Somehow I doubt that they (the bank) will get them, seeing how a lot of people are trying to snatch up every one they can.

You are correct.  :131-  the bank called me today and said they were told they can no longer be ordered :-(

On a positive note, they had 83 of them that they had in "the drawer" I was able to snag at face value.  Deal of the day!  :-)

thats awesome that they had 83. My bank gets there change from DUNBAR Armoured. and i have a nephew who works at Dunbar. he told me they had almost 250k of them in storage, and they were in process of shipping back to fed reserve, and they were not allowed to distribute any longer.
