To look at the two beasts they are fairly similar.
Obviousl visual differences - The S2000 typically has stereo speakers on the player tracking bar. S2000 may be coinless with TITO (Ticket In, Ticket Out). This typically means there is a plate over the coin drop.

Internally the machine is completely different. The S2000 MPU uses SIMMS including custom Sound Simms for cool stereo effects like the Munsters theme song.
The S+ would use 2 chips. A Game Chip and a Reel Chip. These can easily be backed up and re burnt using an inexpensive Eprom Burnner. The chips are 27c64 and 27c256, but I use a 27c512 across the board with a minor programming offset.
Replicating Simms is not easily done and much more expensive.

All S+ games work in the S2000 (using the legacy chips) but S2000 games cannot be used in a S+
There are a couple of themes which we call cross over themes where the paytable on the glass of the S2000 match up with an existing paytable on the S+ which sort of lets that theme work on the S+. Ie Munsters and Pink Panther work on the S+ but this is using the reel chip for 5xwild.
Of course none of the music works on the S+

S+ parts are cheap and readily available. Machines are like a tank - rock solid. S2000 part availability is good but I would use the term affordable vs cheap.
IE used S+ board on Ebay <$30, used S2000 board $400

Used S2000 boards for $400? Where? That's got to be a typo Jay. Forty to a hundred depending on the board
