Title: Generator problem re: 3 Phase power
Post by: fiddlefarter on March 20, 2013, 09:59:25 PM
A friend has bought a Gelato GX4 Frigomat batch freezer 400V/50HZ 3 Phase 4kW freezer and also bought a Pretige 3 Phase generator 7.79 KVA generator that outputs 27Amps, apparantly the earth is burning black when she turns the machine on, can anyone suggest anything. She is using a 20Amp plug on the gelato machine  :103-

What do you mean by the "earth is burning black"

She has told me that the earth pin is burnt black

Ok, by earth pin I will have to assume "GROUND" or the Equipment Grounding Conductor.  You stated the equipment is 50HZ, is the generator also 50HZ or 60HZ?  That is just for curiosity because it wouldnt have any effect on leakage current or current to ground.

The only time there should be voltage or current on the ground (earth pin) is during a ground fault.  It is also possible that there is some type of mismatched plug-receptacle in which true 3 phase devices were not used or a 3 wire device was used where a 4 wire should have been used and the ground is now wired for a current carrying conductor.

Can you provide more info.  Type of Male cord cap (plug) type of receptcale on the generator.  Is it 3 phase with a neutral or just 3 phase with a ground.

On the other side of the pond they call the "ground" wire the "earth". Remember, not all of our members are from the USA. :)

Here is the link to the fridge http://www.frigomat.com/prodottoSingolo.php?lang=en&id=50 and here is the link to the generator http://www.sellitonline.com.au/pretige-diesel-three-phase-single-phase-generator-779kva-p-677.html This 3 phase stuff is a bit over my head but I am baffled by this situation.

Only thing that I can ad to this topic is:
With a generator you need to run to a min 6 ft copper spike driven into the ground and attached with a bare #8 copper wire back to the ground lug on the generator.
The neutral is the center pin and then you have three hot legs.
(no that's not a pun)
