Buttons don't work all the time

Little history on this machine. Went under water halfway up the reels 5 years ago in Katrina. Sat outside for 4 month under a carport. Everything kind of rusted up but finally got her going then things statred failing again.  Replaced reel motors, motherboard, bill validater and various other parts. This machine has been working pretty good until everything went dead except lights and thanks to these boards I found out that it was power harness to MB. Wish I had known about these boards then. Now works but occasionally all the buttons quit working. Sometimes I can wiggle wires and buttons start working again sometimes not. Any Ideas would greatly be appreciated.  Thanks Joe

Hi Joe. I noticed that you posted this in the generic tech section and didn't mention anything about the kind of machine you have. That would probably be the most important piece of information. Since you mentioned the power harness to the MB, I'm guessing it's an IGT S+, but then again, I'm terrible at guessing games.

I'll bet it's an ..............S+?  

Change the MPU with a known good MPU that was never under water.
And take a couple a pictures of this rusty thing for us to gaze at...

You guys are too smart for me, that's why I like coming here for all the help. Yes it is an s+ belongs to my sister and she says that I just won't let it die. Seems I fix 1 thing and 2 more problems show up. I also have an s+ that I never have had a problem with and I borrow parts from to trouble shoot hers. but now I can get a lot of my answers here.  Thanks everybody  Great site!!!

I'd be really concerned of how much damage occurred to the power supply.
Flaky, unsteady power will give a katrina-victimized machine all kinds of problems down the road.
What's scarier is that the wires inside that baby will short out
and cause even more serious problems.

With that much rust fermenting and growing inside the lower half of a slot machine,
there's going to be serious damage and I highly doubt that machine will last much
longer unless various main parts get removed and replaced by non-rusted components.

Even a little bit of oxidization on a ground pin inside of a molex motherboard
power connector housing will cause trouble.
I cannot even begin fathom how much rust is inside your lower connector housings.

jomar, I would never have put the effort into a Katrina S+, given how common and affordable the machine is, but now that you've already done all that work, we'll try to help you get it fixed.

OMG...look at the rust around the fuses under the cash box...

C'mon Bunker you know you want to dive  in and work on it !!! I think that is why alot of us got into this hobby. To learn things and push the limits of our knowledge, technical ablility, and budgets In my  case mostly  my budget.. :208-I would think a dremel tool with a sanding attachment would do  wonders on the insde of the case and a new fuse box. But have it unplugged of course.

haha! You're right GL! I'd strip that baby down and get rid of all the rust first.
Then put it back together piece by piece - checking everything!
Then I'd make new harnesses or at the very least, change out the pins and receptor pins.
That motherboard is probably ready to blow a gasket as well as the lower part of the MPU.
The transformer inside the power supply box might be worth swapping out.
Basically, it would go through a makeover but in the end, you'll have
a fine machine that will serve the proud owner for years!
