831 Wont Zero

First time on the forum, first time trying to make a machine work. I have an 831 (mid 70's) that has a few problems, the biggest issue is that it will not reset after a payout. For example: If it pays three coins for a win, unless the next win is larger  it will not dispense coins. But if the next win should be ten, it will dispense 7 coins 7 + 3 from the previous pay. From what I have read, the reset of the counter should occur when the machine get's pulled. My question is, what would be the best way to test the counter zero circuit?  Thanks in advance.

There is a set of leaf switches on the handle switch assembly. Check for contact there to start. Also pull the hopper and check the reet coil for a broken connection or broken wire from the solder tab into the coil. That i where I would start, but coul be a bad connection in the plug connection in the cabinet where it slides into.
Along with this I assume that the reset linkage and shaft move freely if you trigger the reset by hand. If not, lubrication of this will help.

Only 2 switches operate the hopper reset coil.  The zero switch (on your hopper), and the B switch which is located on the left side of your reel mech, just above the clock and fan.   It closes when you push back on the black timing bar (variator) or when you pull the handle the same thing happens.  It is a horizontal set of switches which ride on the bar.  If both those are good, then you might have a bad reset coil, or loose wire somewheres.

Thanks for all the help gang. You guys got me in the right direction. This is the first time I have ever messed with a slot, so I am finding it a lot of fun. I pulled the hopper unit, and used the voltages in the machine to make sure that the coil was good. It read 15 ohms, so I was pretty sure that it was ok, but I wanted to see it work. Although my hopper is a little different then the pictures you posted, it assured me I was looking at the right things. I put a meter on the output of the zero switch when it should have read short, and it read open. Take a closer look, I realized that the switch was not making contact. I removed and adjusted the switch, and now the machine pays out correctly. Here is the pic of the gap on the switch, that I never noticed. Now, on to the feature unit.

Good job. I was working on my slot in the same area. The little rubber stop cushion was breaking down and getting gummy. I find that when it doubt, especially with my tired eyes, I put a meter on it.
