My buddy has a PE+ slant top and he says that recently whenever you put a bill in it would add a few credits, then it would display "verifying data," add a few more credits, repeat, etc. After that, it would play normal,
but now every now and they it would display "verifying data" in the middle of normal game play. I had him check that the doors are closed tight and the sensors are secure. I also had him check the wires to the buttons
since he replaced them recently. Apparently the screen doesn't flash or anything when it does this. I thought maybe it could be the power supply going bad. Any ideas?

With a PE+ superboard (which he has), the game will display "Verifying Data - Please Wait" after a door has opened and then was closed.  It could be any door - the main hatch or the bill validator access door.  You are correct in your diagnosis about checking to make sure the doors are closed tightly and the sensors are secure.  I believe that the bill validator door uses a microswitch with a leaf on it (I'm not positive about that, though, as my slant top knowledge is very limited) -- that may need to be adjusted.

Another way you can confirm that this is a door issue is to have your friend stop as soon as the "verifying data" message appears.  Once the game screen returns, look for a small line of text at the bottom of the screen that says, "closure" -- that message indicates that the machine thinks that a door was open and was just closed.  In addition, the bottom segment of the candle should be blinking rapidly until the end of the next paid game (indicating that there was an open door which has since been closed).

Since the problem seems to happen more frequently when a bill is inserted, I'd focus on the door sensor(s) near the bill validator -- likely the vibration of the motors in the validator and stacker are causing a door sensor up there to rattle and occasionally show that a door is open.  Again, I'm not too familiar with the slant top machines, but if there's a second door within the cash can area (that provides access to the cash can), that likely also has a microswitch for a door sensor and would be a likely suspect.

Thanks Knagl. He rechecked the BV door and seems to be fairly certain it's the cherry switch.
Much appreciated.
