AFAIK, NSW MK5 boards running US software will most likely fail their POST with an "external video crystal error". On the NSW boards, the 25 MHz crystal (underneath the main ARM250 processor) is not populated since Australian software doesn't require it (they use the ARM's internal video timing). There is a chance that the US games might also baulk at unexpectedly finding a "DRAM Emulator" present as well, since the US software doesn't use it. Also, I believe the backplanes slightly differ as well. Lastly, the NSW boards may or may not have the three backup batteries (most NSW boards only use one battery, and the remaining battery holders are not even populated on the board), so any software looking for these will also fail the startup tests with two separate low battery errors.

You can run USA MK6 eproms on AU/NZ MK6 machines , I do not think MK5.1 will work as Heihachi said.
Cheers.

Tried a US game on my Mark 5, and as expected it didn't work. It came up with a video crystal error.

I have seen US backplanes on EBay and they have three plugs for a larger driver/coms board. My Machine has only two plugs, one for a Driver and the other for the COMs board.

As for the battery error, New Zealand games require three batteries, however do run on my NSW machine. The machine will however come up with a low battery error every 10 or so spins. Whilst it stops play, the machine is still playable, however it gets really frustrating having to fix the error all the time.

Also, having the buttons inverted might feel weird, depending on which machines you're used to.

On the US games, you select the amount of paylines via the topmost buttons, then press a bet button underneath to spin the reels.

On the AU and export machines (non-US), the bet multiplier buttons are on the top row, whilst the line selections are at the bottom and will spin the reels when pressed (you cannot select the amount of paylines without spinning). Also, the machine/denomination setup is entirely done via the audit mode rather than swapping out the EPROMs with set chips.
