Buzz    your power supply could be causing the problem, there are two ckt. boards in the power supply. The first is the power supply itself (+12vdc  out to the bill head)  and the second provides an interface to the main logic board via the cable to the motherboard.

So there can  be several things causing your intermittent credit function.

#86 LED
Behind the Denomination label on a S+ and a S2000 (#73 version) it is like the LED do not put out enough light or it is does not spread out enough (narrow beam) to make the denomination look right.
I did order the 25-3005 ande it did work in the S+, according the packing list and order comfirmation.

They do have Denomination LED (uses 4 LED's) for the S2000, Vision and had a 6-7V version with yellow LED's, but I am not sure about why yellow.

Bill Validator
There is a signal (Vend I think they call it) that the bill is in the stacker  and until the machine gets that signal it will not add the credits.
If you remove the stacker while a bill is in the transport. you will not get credits and the machine may tilt.

My understanding is the bill validator is enabled by the machine, it accepts the bill holds it in the transport and head area, BV communicates the machine the denomination. machine either communicates to BV accept or reject the bill.
if it rejected it is returned to player.
if it is accepted then the machine signals the BV to accept bill then at some point the BV lets the machine know the bill has been stacked, at that point the machine should add the credits.
