power supply swap out

Hey guys, newbie alert. My neighbor opened up a little casino and asked me to take a look at one of his machines as it wasn't powering up. I know a lil bit of I.T. but nothing to do with casino machines. I tried the power supply of a working machine and that did the trick so now he has a bad power supply. not being able to source a new one economically we figured a cheap alternative may be the next line of action. I rewired a pc power supply to the power connector on the board and that gave some life to the machine i.e. the red led's on the boards came on. but i don't know how to wire up the bill validator and the monitor. I took a look at some of the other machines to get an idea however the other machines use lcd/touchscreens but the one I'm working with has a crt. it has a connector to the bottom left corner beneath the monitor that runs back to the board and three wires went to the old power supply a white, green and black wire. I know the black is ground what i really want to know is WHAT VOLTAGE SHOULD I RUN TO THE GREEN AND WHITE WIRES? wow that was a page full. Any help would be appreciated.

Without knowing what type machine you're dealing with it would be difficult to say, but if that's a 120ac line then green is ground, black is hot and white is neutral. The type of plug on the crt board will sometimes give it away. If the power in goes through a set of rectifier diodes first thing, then you're looking at 120ac input

pictures of their machine so we can drool over them or help identify them.
Is your camera broken because I have no idea what kinda of machine your friend has
other than the fact that it might be a slot machine.
It's like saying saying I have a car to sell...okay....uh, ....what kind?
I'll clue you in on something - there's many different kinds of slot machines...
Is there a model number on the side?
Maybe a manufacturer name? What did you mean by "I.T."?      IGT?

Anyways, a  couple of photos of both the outside and inside would help you a lot!
It would help us a whole bunch if we could see your friends machine so we
determine how to help you become a slot technician...lol

He meant Information Technology (ie. "computer stuff").

eLiTe(tryn2B): Welcome to the site!    As the others have said, we need to know what kind of machine you're working on.  The description you've provided so far would be akin to asking an auto mechanic, "I have a car with a steering wheel and 4 wheels.  What do I connect to the red and blue wires?"


Also, and I'm not sure where you're located, but if you're in the United States, it is not wise to run or help your friend run an illegal casino.  Your friend (and you, if you were in there repairing his machines when he gets busted) could face some serious charges, fines, and/or jail time.  We do welcome you to the site and we'll be happy to help you with repair of machines that are being used legally, but we do not promote, endorse, or support any illegal activities.

Ok, so if the other power supply worked, just measure the voltages of all of the connectors that are being used (on the good power supply).

First off THANKS for the welcome. sorry for being so vague with the info , just found out today that the machine is a WMS 550. I had asked about the voltage after using my multimeter on a good power supply. I went back today and realised my multimeter wasn't making proper contact . Retesting showed the white wire carrying 110V the black being neutral and the green with yellow stripe being the isolated eart ground. I ran a surge protector inside the chassis so I plugged on the PC power supply into one and attached a plug to the wires from the monitor and plugged that in to the surge strip. This worked, however when the machine came on I'm getting a message on the screen saying "CRC Corrupt" anyone got a take on this?

As for my location and if it's an illegal casino, I'm from Trinidad West Indies, and the casino is not an illegal one lol

I'm not a WMS video guy, but there are plenty of folks on the site who are -- I'm sure one of them will see this thread and be able to help you.  For sure, if your casino friend has a WMS clear chip, doing a clear and re-configuration should fix the issue if the machine was previously working.  There may be a way to get past the error without clearing, however, so I'd wait until you get some better advice from some of our other members.

For what it's worth, a CRC Corrupt error would be telling you something along the lines of a software problem, that a signature on the software isn't matching what the machine expects.

You can confirm that your power supply modification isn't causing the issue by putting a known good factory supply back in the machine.  If the machine still gives you the same error, your power supply fix is good.  If the error goes away with the factory supply but comes back with your computer power supply mod, then you'll know that there's still something wrong with your new power supply solution.

Williams  550.   Blue  monitor screen.   CRC  corrupt...  etc. 

   Do a RAM  clear... You might also check the  1/2 AA  Lithium Battery on  CPU for  3.6 V  DC  before doing the clear. 

For your information...  "how it got to  CRC   corrupt "....   several possiblities...  I've had one show the error after just moving the machine !

Good luck with that. The software to do it might be one of the best kept secrets in the gaming industry. Access to something like that would mean eventual access to being able to redeem vouchers on games used at home

thanks for the suggestions, I swapped out my power supply fix with a good one and still got the crc corrupt message, I started thinking back in my field (I.T.) and said hey lemme reseat both chips, did this and it worked...Reinstalled the makeshift power supply and hey the machines back up and running. 

Always great when you get a machine fixed.  Way to go!
