Which lubricants to use on machine

My Bally Series E manual says to use Lubriplate Oil #1 and Hydrotex Lube #651. 

It looks like the Lubriplate will be easy to find but I could not find the Hydrotex in a Google Search. 

I think the manual indicates that Marvels Mystery Oil can be used in place of the Lubriplate but does not mention a substitute for the Hydrotex. 

If Hydrotex Lube #651 is not available, what is an acceptable substitute?

We used to use light motor oil mixed with an amount of that brown axle grease until it reaches a nice consistency.  Mix it so that you can get a gob on a keno brush and paint onto the bushing surfaces.  That's for tearing down and rebuilding the mechs.  Otherwise, I kinda like mineral oil for just quickie lubes, or any good light machine oil....

I have always liked 3 in 1 oil and it sounds like that might be OK after cleaning everything up first.

I am about to clean and test my E-series (2226) slot machine that was purchased a few months ago.

The machine gives a #41 error message and from a previous question I was told that it might be a defective reel reader.  I am about to test it but was wondering if the fact that the number one reel is locked up and the other two spin freely means anything and might have an effect on what I should do.

While testing the reel reader, I thought it might be good to clean up anything else that I encounter.  I bought some contact cleaner (spray can) and am not sure it is safe for the plastic or resin parts inside the machine such as circuit boards.  The coin hopper looks like something that could be easily cleaned although I am not aware of any problems with it.  I had carb cleaner in mind for this job.

Are there any articles available that might tell what chemicals are safe for slot machine cleaning and also, contain some guidance?

I wouldn't use the contact cleaner on any plastic parts without doing a test first.  It should be fine on the circuit boards.

I wouldn't use carb cleaner on the whole hopper, maybe the disassembled metal parts, but not the motor.  It may be fine, but I'm not sure.  I just used soap and water on the disassembled parts, with the exception of the motor.  Compressed air to dust off the motor, is all I used to do.

If you unlatch the 1st reel does it spin freely? The bearing on the hub at the center shaft could be dry. I like to do some cleaning with Rubbing Alcohol and a clean towel. I've also done some cleaning with WD40. It will dissolve old dried grease and oil. The alcohol cleans up any WD40 over spray and drys fast. I would not use the carb cleaner, too harsh...

Wd-40. Works very good that's what I use. Just on metal though. Clean the arms behind the reels. Clean all the goo. Off and work arms with hand. Until the springs free up. And it should spin right. Good luck.

I am about to lube my slot machine and sewing machine oil was recommended by an oil company representative.  It sounds good to me.  I told him that I had thought of 3 in 1 oil and he said not to use it or Marvels Mystery oil because they have a simlar viscosity and would not be the best products for this use.

I have not found Hydrotex 651 yet but have found out that it is no longer made because the company revised it to make it better.  I hope to sooon find out what the new product is called and if unsuccessul, may try something like axle or bearing grease or something else if it comes to mind.

I have assembled everything that should be needed for oiling my slot machine and am going to start either tomorrow or Sunday.  Before starting, I thought of something that I should clearify before going much farther.

Most of the products needed for oiling are ready but the word cleaning led me to wonder if I need to actually need to clean the parts before olling and greasing.  I still have not found a substitute for Hydrotex yet but figured that I could use something else like wheel bearing grease sparingly and if I can find the new version of Hydrotex, can clean off the grease and use Hydrotex.

I don't see any evidence of anything but did find two parts that were supposed to move (parts holding reels in place) but were frozen in place.  Now, they move freely after a small amount of sewing machine oil was applied.

My tool for spinning the reels while they are out of the cabinet is now ready to get the handle welded on and I am going to try to find someone to do it tomorrow.  If I can't find anyone, I may thread the screwdriver shaft and install it with a nut in lieu of welding.

Is simply oiling and greasing the parts adequate?

Sounds like you have it figured out and under control . Cleaning the machine I would just wipe off any excess oil or grease so it doesn't go every where. Good to hear that you did find a few things sticking or frozen, hopefully that will fix  the problem you were having. Keep us posted.

I was given a fax number to order some Hydrotex 651 and I sent a fax a week or two ago. 

Today, I received an email from the company and he said that he just found my fax.  He enclosed a link to his web site and I just ordered some HydroTex from him.  Prices and shipping costs are good.
