Where did you read this??   Scratch Head  It is my understanding that most everyone is removing the "green" battery to prevent corrosion problems....

There was a post the other day questioning the neccessity of the green battery on these boards, but I don't think it got answered. The topic drifted to 504B boards and whether the green battery was important on them and that's about as far as it got

In some cases, software dependent, the green battery is necessary otherwise some anomaly's will occur, like "no display", when using an enhanced board.  Also have found this in some cases using a 504B board manufactured by Keytronics.

Jim, refering to the problem I was having earlier with my Denver Duck. If the nicad battery voltage is down to 3.1v could this be causing my "netplex link is down" error?

I really think your main board is the problem.  Secondary thought might be the top box hard drive going bad.

THANKS.   Should i also change the green one not knowing how old the board sat before i got it

Can you check it with your multimeter?  No sense in replacing it if it physically looks good (no evidence of leaking) and if it's output is where it should be.

Can the battery be tested on the board without unsoldering it

The topbox will go through it's startup, bios check and such, but never actually starts because the MPU is flashing the red light as soon as I turn the game on. I think you're right about the MPU being bad. I've got 2 others I'm using in other games, need to take the time to clear one and swap it over to the duck. I can eliminate the legacy adapter as a potential problem by swapping one from anothe machine and switching the chips without having to reprogram though can't I?
