IGT HOPPER : Cleaning the Elevator ???

 How in the world is it possible to clean the elevator on an IGT slant-top hopper ???
 
 Mine ( elevator ) is partially pitted with a little bit of rust I'd like to remove so the coins can slide inside it with little or no resistance.

 I took it off the hopper, but the whole assy. is welded together with only the middle of the elevator being able to see ( to be cleaned ).

 Suggestions ? Do I need a whole new one ?

Ouch! Sounds like it was a Hurricane Katrina victim...a lot of machines were damaged and sold off after that event.
I remember getting a whole box of S+ MPU's that basically were rusted to hell.

The only thing I can suggest is not easy...
I would try four things to get the rust off from the inside of the elevators.

1). Somehow attach a very rough grit sand paper to a very stiff spring-like wire maybe about 3 feet long
     and sand back and forth through the entire elevator - esp where the rust is.

2). Maybe have a auto body shop sandblast it?

3). Look for some type of acidic wash spray rust/remover solution from an auto parts store?

4). Coat the inside of the elevator with a Sailkote McLube dry-lubricant spray.
     I used to use this stuff on the hulls and spars of the sailboat...water doesn't even stick to it.
     In fact, they also coat the sails with it so air doesn't stick to it!!!!!
     I imagine that once it is completely covered over the rust pits, the coins will slide through the elevator like a hot knife through butter.

Whatever you do, do NOT get it on the floor....you will slide and slip on it and break your neck!   
For laughs, we used to spray a little on the seat of our competitors boats on Tuesday night fun races....
It was hilarious watching them slide their behinds all over their racing dinghy's...lol 
Kinda hard to control the tiller when you can't sit still !!!

My neighbor next door who is a landscaper came up with an ingenious way to clean the elevator. Can't believe I didn't think of this:

THE SOLUTION:

 Get one of those green Scotch Brite pads and cut a strip from it the width of a quarter.
 Slide it into the elevator with the help of a flat-head screwdriver.
 Soak the pad with any cleaner (409, Purple Power even Liquid Sandpaper works well ).
 With the help of the screwdriver, work the pad up and down the elevator many multiple times.
 Remove pad, rinse elevator and let dry over night.

 WHALLA ! Shiny and smooth...almost looks new.

 It's actually called "Liquid Deglosser". Stuff works great !

Liquid deglosser is a solvent that dulls a glossy painted surface, so it can be repainted without the time consuming job of hand sanding.
