Hi,

Quick question, what is the voltage of the battery on the ChamII+ board?

I finally got my monitor back from the repair guy with the new cap kit fitted and all I got was a black 'Call Attendant' screen as 'Low Battery', I've changed that on the PE+, but now the Mikohn ones gone too

Thanks

Paul

It's a Panasonic VL2020  3 volt.

Ok, it's been too long since aanybody posted in this thread.

I got my CHAMII+ from April (), built my serial cable using nothing but the finest Radio Shack parts, installed the Download for Windows and PSP software, and I can configure jackpots, etc. on the CHAMII+.

Next question: What is the name of the connector (i.e. Molex) used at the slot machine end of the machine interface cable that runs between the slot and the CHAMII+?  How about the name of the connector at the CHAMII+ end? It looks like I should be using the one at J7, which is a 14 pin.

And finally, what is the Sound option? It looks like a way to transmit sound from the CHAMII+ to a speaker or amplifier (which one?) using the RS232 port, but I can't find any information that pertains to pinout to sound system, or file types that need to be uploaded to the CHAMII+ in order to play sound.

On the machine side you can use either a AMP MTA .156 4 Pin push-on connector, or a Molex .156 K.K. 4 pin Connector (requires pins if used).

On the CHAMII+ J7 connector use an AMP AMPMODU MOD. IV center polorized 14 pin connector (requires pins)

For those connectors that requires pins a crimping tools should be used to coonect the wire to the pin.  I f are only doing 1 or 2, you can get by with a screwdriver to do the push-on type but it's best to use the tool that's made for them.

These can be found in the mouser catalog.

If you need Mouser part numbers let me know and i will post them.

Thanks. I'll check locally first, although for some reason this kind of stuff is getting harder and harder to find around here. I'd really not expected that.

Are those .100" centerline on the Mikohn side? If so, Jameco has them, just across the Bay!

Well, maybe they don't.

Can you post Mouser P/Ns?

Thanks.

Yes, they are .100 ".  They are in Jameco's catalog as part number 496157.

So it's not in stock and you want it from mouser instead?

There's a couple of surplus places around here that can reference it by the Mouser #,
and yes, if Mouser can get it to me faster I'll order from them.

I'm one of those "instant gratification" types.

On the S+ side, why does that connector look like a CD-ROM audio connector? Is that what it is? If so, I've got a few of thos cables laying around.

I thought you were referring to the connector on the mother board.  If your machine has one of those CD-ROM type extension connectors you can use that too.

So, I peeked into the S+ this morning before rushing to work, and it looked like the connector was a 4 pin like below picture #1, and would use a cable like picture 2 below. And yes, this is on the S+ motherboard.

You could also try HALTED SPECIALTIES over on Central Expy in Sunnyvale if you get out that way.  They got lots of electronic Stuff but pretty much requires a walk thru, picked up some connectors and cable for my Progressive Display project and a old Needhams Eprom Burner a month  ago for a good price even though didn't need it.

Since Anchor on Walsh was closed, Halted was the next stop (straight down Walsh, it turns into Kifer, and a right just before the light at Costco puts you into the back entrance of their parking lot  ), and yes, they had both.

Now working like a Champ, err, CHAMII+ (with no way to mount it yet).

What I thought I saw this morning was in the middle of the first pic. What I found after removing the plastic cover is in the center of the second. You can just see the digit rolling up in pic 3.

Now if I can just get an answer to my sound question...

I have a full disc of ALL kinds of goodies that you can use.       There are some 1 X 3 demos on the disc I sent you with your EBAY stuff but no 2 X 3 stuff. Have a CONII to run the progressive totals to your supreme? Also....do not forget to provide some cooling for your 2 X 3. Both my 1 X 3 and my 2 X 3 have cooling fans. I have your address and I will get you a copy burned and send it to you. Has over 50 graphic and multiline displays on it from Atlantic city casinos. Tim

Does anyone have this CD, or an zip file or an image of it I can download?

I have a MIKOHN CHAM2+ that was working fine
Yesterday I plugged it in and nothing
Nothing comes up on the display and the LED's on the controller board do not light up
Anyone have any thoughts on what it could be?       power supply bad?
Any tests I could perform that would tell for sure?

Thanks in advance

At the risk of being Captain Obvious, you can check the power supply for output voltage. Sounds like a good place to start based on your symptoms. All power for the CHAMII+ board is supplied through the red and black wires at J1, should be 12VDC. If you've got 12 V there while plugged in and powered up, the problem is on the CHAMII+ board. If you don't have 12V there, check for 12V with the J1 connector unplugged.

Do not have 12V either way, I checked that yesterday first thing
That is why I suspect the power supply
But I just wanted to see if I was possibly missing something by someone with more experience with this setup

Thanks

How's your board-level repair skills?

If it's not something you're comfortable with tackling yourself, I would recommend either April at Lemans1969 above, or maybe Ben at Fannini Slots. There's links to them above.

I've gotten progressive stuff from April, a pleasure to deal with, and she seems to have plenty of stock and is knowledgeable. I've gotten stuff from Ben, he is a pleasure to deal with and has plenty of stock and is knowledgeable. You can't go wrong with either one!

minimal at best....possible easy fix?

I bought the setup from April at Lemans, I contacted her and she said I could send it back and she would exchange the power supply

Back when my skills at BL repair were minimal, I'd go looking for fuses or obvious problems, such as exploded parts. beyond that, I'd be looking for replacement.

Good to hear that April has offered a replacement, that's perfectly in line with the dealings I've had with her.

Yes    I think sending it back for exchange would be the best option

Looking at the board inside the ps, I did not see anything really obvious other than a slight darkening of the board itself on one end
Which I suppose could be something or nothing at all

Thanks for the help

They say you can also use any standard PC power supply since your only tapping the 12v side, also since most have an internal fan might help longevity of the unit too.

I would imagine one of the H/D molex connectors.  Those connectors are carrying 12v, 5v and the 2 grounds so just a matter of using the 12v side.  You would have to hot wire the on signal to the p/s but that should just consist of 1 jumper at the larger connector.  Shouldn't be that tough but if you got one coming to ya for free I wouldn't bother carving up a 'puter p/s.

Would you know how to adapt that to use it?
How would you adapt the plug?

This discussion comes up often - wanting to use an inexpensive PC power supply just for the +12Volts.

While in theory, it should work, in practice, it might not.  This is because a PC power supply is designed around regulating the +5V (and not the +3.3V) while the 12 volts is just a tag along as to regulation.  Most Switching regulators only monitor the 5 volts and not the 12.  Without a load of any kind on the +5, there is no reference and to load down the +12, can cause issues.  Typically, the power supply may only power up for a second and overshoot its 5 volt target and then shut down.  When you turn down the 5 volt adjustment (if it even has one) low enough to keep it running, the 12 volts is usually way under 12. You can solve this issue by adding a load to the +5 volt line (red and black on the Hard drive connectors).  A 1 ohm 10 watt resistor will work, but, may also generate heat.  If you can mount it inside the power supply near the fan openings, or get the screw down power resistor type and mount it to the power supply case - that will work too.

But, the better choice, in my opinion, is to purchase a +12VDC ONLY power supply.  They use to be fairly reasonable from Happ Controls (around $30) but now I see they have raised the price to over $40 in single qty.  http://www.happcontrols.com/powersupplies/80021500.htm

Of course, any surplus 12 volt regulated power supply would work too as long as it can deliver enough amperage for your display.  Since the Mikohn are continually scanning the LEDs, they really work a power supply hard (continuously high load, no load conditions).  This is why you typically hear them zinging when the display is lit.
