for its price it is a decent one.
Especially since the software developers made sure it works with all Windows Versions including 64 bit that we use.

That's the one I have.
And till the guys here told me that was a
good one I had no idea how to burn chips.
But the software makes it a no brainier to
make backup copy's and to backup the files to your computer.

Depending on what chips you are looking to back up you will most likely want this adapter as well:

http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4289

It is a 16 bit eprom adapter needed to read and program 16 bit eproms for chips like Base and Key chips for IGT igames and S2000's.

Also I have had the GQ-4X for several years and am happy with it!

You may call the MFGR and see if they can do a bundle deal with the adapter... It does not hurt to ask. You may at least save on shipping? Also tell them that you were sent to them by me and Newlifegames. They may remember that I said we would send people their way?

Get the full pack..I did not. But I was only doing IGT stuff at the time. You have other brands and it would not hurt for the little difference in price.

Ford, if money is tight you might consider this 16 bit adapter instead of the one in CH's CaptainHappy link.
It's the same adapter but lacks a ZIF socket for the 42 pin chips and is $10 cheaper.

http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4290

If you're not going to be burning 42 pin chips this might be the way to go, but if you think you'll need to use the 42 pin socket more than once in a blue moon I'd spend the extra $10 and get the one with two ZIFs. You might also want to consider how handy you are at inserting and removing large chips before getting the cheaper one. propeller

Here's CH's CaptainHappy original link so you can make a quick comparison.

http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4289

I have the GQ-4X and am very happy with it. I don't own 100 slots and don't burn dozens of chips at a time. For those who do there are faster (and more expensive) units out there. The GQ-4X will burn about 1 Megabit/min (8 min for an 8 Meg chip). It reads chips much more quickly.

Another way of saving money would be to buy the burner by itself ("light pack") instead of the full pack. That would save you another $25.

I realize that others have said otherwise, but the extras in the full pack are all intended for PLCC chips. They are those square chips with pins on all four sides. I honestly don't know of any major slots in which you'd find yourself dealing with PLCC chips as a matter of course. If you have arcade games you might need them. I'm sure someone will post if I'm wrong – but again, it's a way of shaving a few dollars off the cost if money is an issue.

You'll use that 16 bit 40/42 pin adapter FAR more than you'll use any PLCC adapters for our hobby, IMHO.

As Stat has said the light pack would save some money... The only thing that I can think of that we use that uses PLCC chips would be the IGT Spectrum II Progressive displays.

As for the adapter that Stat pointed out, that is an older version like what I have, but it has been backordered for some time now, you should check with the mfgr for more details, but I suspect that they will probably want to steer people to the newer adapter that they have in stock. Scratch Head

Personally I'd get the newer one with two ZIF sockets, but he said cost was an issue. Again, I don't think the slots use many 42 pin chips. Scratch Head I could be wrong. Scratch Head 2 Scratch Head 3  I agree that you should check the expected arrival date of new stock before ordering the cheap one.

P.S. Hmmm. One more post makes 9K. stir the pot / get cooking

Now you have to get some blank chips to play with. And have fun backing up all the chips you have to a safe place. I use cheap thumb drives and keep a backup in a fire proof safe. Lost too many hard drives to trust them.
