Now you have to get some blank chips to play with. And have fun backing up all the chips you have to a safe place. I use cheap thumb drives and keep a backup in a fire proof safe. Lost too many hard drives to trust them.

Good advice.
I don't know what # chips to look for or where a good place is to get them.

When buying chips, don't do the newby thing and ignore chip speed. Don't buy any chips that you do not know the speed. For the S2000 you will used 27c4002 for the SB , Clear and Key chips. Get 120 or 100 ns if possible. (27c4002-120) , 27c080 or 27c801 for the SG chips, 27c1001 or 27c010 for the version chips. IGT S-Plus uses 27c64 200ns or faster for 10Mhx boards or 120ns or faster for 16Mhz for the SS Reel chips (use 100 or faster if you plan to use the SS chip in a s2000 board.) 27c512-150 or faster for the SP chip

Ford, don't bid too high on those chips, In my buying experience the chips with the yellow lables are poker machine chips which tend to be 27c256 and 27c128 chips which you will have no use for unless you have old PE or PE+ machines. You can blow up the picture and read 256 on a few.

I agree, just giving him some info to remember when falling into GOOD deals on e-bay. The 512's are the best way to go on S+ chips. I bought a case of a 1000 27c512-100's brand new in the tubes at a local auction for $0.22 a piece a few years ago. I use them for everything.

The 27C512 holds 8 times as much data as a 27C64. So think of it as having 8 'banks'. To use a 27C512, you have two options.

1. Load the data using offset C000 which put it in the correct 'bank'. How to set the offset will vary depending on the burner software.
2. Create a file that has 8 copies of the data. One in each bank. There are several ways to do this, but I use the 'DOS' command:

copy /b 1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin 27512.bin /b

where 1.bin is the original file and 27512.bin is the resulting file that you just burn directly to the 27512. I use this in a batch file and just rename the original file to 1.bin before running it.

You can download the gq-4x software from MCU Mall and it will run in demo mode without the programmer. That way you can play around with it and get use to where things are.

You know I think when you get a fellow that knows what he's doing, he finds the hard way of doing it. At least for me it's the hard way but not to him. Take this copy /b 1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin 27512.bin /b   I'm lost. Now here's the way Stat says to do it, again I'm lost and he's the one that taught me how to do it.

I can do it in 15 seconds flat from start to finish (does not include using the burner). It does include the time it takes to open the original file in HxD, copy, paste x8, save new file and close HxD. I just timed it. 

(Hint: You don't have to take your pinky off of the <ctrl> key. Just press and hold it, then hit A, C, V, V, V, V, V, V, V, V)

I open the file with HxD, copy it once and paste it 8 times, save as, then burn the new file.  The only thing I have to remember is copy, paste and know how to count to 8  ( 4 if it's a 27C256 chip ) !!  I guess I'll just keep on doing it the hard way.

When I start I'm going to use some old game chips first so I don't screw up a good game.

That is why you can just put it in a batch file (i.e. 27512.bat) and forget about it. You then just take the original file, rename it to 1.bin, and double click the batch file. Done.  Actually what I do is I have a 'working' folder, for example c:\burner. That folder has all of the conversion batch files and that's it. So then I stick a COPY of the original file in there, rename it and run the batch file. Then I can just delete the 1.bin file when I'm done. The next conversion will overwrite the output file 27512.bin.

You can also create different ones for different chips. For example

/b 1.bin+1.bin+1.bin+1.bin 27256.bin /b

and call it 27256.bat

Of course it's just all a matter of personal preference and any of these methods will work.

Ford, The Hxd program Buzz suggests is great to have and well worth getting, (that is the program I used to make Sally's mastercomm chip)

But you can do the cut and paste right in the GQ-4x screen. I will try to make a movie of reading, saving and then burning a SS chip to a 27c512 chip using cut and paste right in the GQ-4x program.

OK Ford, Here is video # 1. Simple backup how-to. the first thing to play with is backing up all your chips to a file.

And a windsheild repair UV light will not cut it.

I bought a ANGO LA6T Professional Ultraviolet EPROM
Eraser for $10 plus shipping. Works great for the few chips
I burn and messed up.
