Hi to everyone,

First post and first machine I've bought. I have to say the web site is great!

I recently found a Players Edge Draw Poker machine. It says that it was manufactured in 12/87 and the model number is 1070D. It was not working properly when I got it. It would power up and cycle through the tests fine until the end when the cards would appear on screen, then quickly disappear. Also, I am still never able to get through the "door open" test. During the test, it also gives me the option for Fortune I or Fortune II. What is the difference?

After a little tinkering and replacing a battery, this is where I am. The screen looks great but displays the message "Door Open" as well as "Coin In Sequence Error". It does have a white door switch however I am not sure about the door optics mentioned in some posts. I cant see any disconnected wires or plugs. The coin comparator appears to have no power to it although everything appears connected. The coin just falls through to the tray. I have tried the reset key on the side without any luck.

Any helpful suggestions and direction would be so greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the site, Matt!

 NLG Welcome

You have an IGT PE (Player's Edge) video poker machine (sometimes called a Player's Edge or PE "non-plus" since it's the generation before the PE+).

I'm a lot more familiar with the PE+ compared to the PE, but can offer a couple of pointers.

  • The "Fortune 1" vs. "Fortune 2" option is, to the best of my knowledge, simply an option as to what style of cards are displayed on the screen.  The Fortune series was the predecessor to the PE series, and the Fortune 1 (really old-school) and the Fortune 2 used different fonts/graphics on the cards.  Players of video machines, especially in their earlier days, were very finicky and didn't trust the things.  I presume that they offered the option on the PE perhaps due to backlash of customers not liking the Fortune 2 graphics versus the Fortune 1 graphics, or perhaps just because they could offer it as a configurable option.

The card graphics used on the Fortune 2 are, with some very minor tweaks along the way, pretty much the same card graphics still used on IGT AVP video poker machines today (the newest machines in the casino).  On the other hand, the Fortune 1 graphics are very dated looking in comparison.

Of note, you have custom cardbacks with the name and logo of a specific casino.  You could switch your graphics chips out for some different ones to get generic cardbacks if you so desired, although I like the unique cardbacks you have!

Anyway, the option for F1 or F2 is just related to the graphics used on the screen, and shouldn't affect gameplay.

  • As you noted, you have two issues to deal with to get your game working: the main door being sensed as open, and the coin-in sequence error.

As far as the coin-in sequence error, there's a small circuit board below the coin comparator in the door that contains a set of optics.  Once the coin is accepted by the comparator, it drops down through the optics and must trigger the optics in the correct order.  This was put in place to prevent people "stringing" coins -- that is, attaching a thin thread to a coin and pulling it up and down to repeatedly trigger the coin mechanism and giving credits incorrectly.  If one of the optics is broken, or if there's something stuck in there (a coin, a large piece of fuzz, paper from a coin roll wrapper, etc.), the game will tilt with a coin-in error.  In particular, it seems that the machine is seeing one or more of the optics blocked in the wrong order.  With the power off, inspect the coin-in optics area for debris (remove the comparator above it if necessary to see in there), try spraying some compressed air in there to get out any dust which could be blocking the optics, and see if that resolves your situation.

In the self test input screen (the first diagnostic screen, I believe, when you press the small white Self Test button next to the hopper), it may tell you more information, perhaps like "COIN IN B" indicating that it thinks the 2nd optic is being blocked.

Also with the power off, make sure that the wire harness that leads to the coin-in optics is firmly plugged in.  If the machine is still reporting the issue, you may have a bad set of optics and may need to repair the board or replace the entire coin-in optics assembly.

  • As far as the main door being reported as open, I believe your machine also uses optics to determine if the door is open or closed (a transmitter and a receiver, with one half mounted on the door that swings open, and the other half fixed on the cabinet.  When the door is closed and latched, the optics meet up and are supposed to tell the machine that the door is closed.  Check the wiring leading to both optics, and again, you could have a bad set which may need replacement.

If your door does not use optics, then it uses a cherry switch to determine the door status.  Find the switch and use a multimeter to determine if the switch is working, then check the wiring back to the board to make sure it's not broken.

I'm not a PE expert -- hopefully someone else will chime in with more ideas to help you get your game up and running.  Best of luck, and again welcome to the site.  yes

I missed this part with my first reply.  This is pretty normal, and is actually two different messages crammed together.  "Door Open" and "Restart".

Door Open means the obvious - it thinks the door is open.

Restart means that the machine was recently powered off and then back on (it was "restarted") -- that message will go away after the first paid game is played.  It is not a tilt per se, just a security warning that the machine was recently power cycled.
