Really you are looking at the same machine here, just different versions of computer board and back plane.  The 044 is "enhanced" and able to play some of the newer games that require a faster processor and video driver.  A 3902 can't play 044 games.  An 044 can play 3902 games if you have an adapter board.  Lobstermania is a 3902 game.  There is no real advantage of going to the extra expense of an 044 setup unless you plan to invest in a bunch of 044 game titles to play right away.  A single 044 game can run you between $200 to $350 for the software alone, where a 3902 game can typically be between $150 to $200 for a single game.  But there are about eighty (80) 3902 games you can explore first  before getting into the 044 titles and many on this site argue that 3902 games are better than the 044 titles (not to me, but again that's just an opinion).

Here's my list of available 3902 games...likely not all available are on here, but as you can see...quite a lot:

Alien
Benny Big Game
Buffet Mania
Catch a Wave
Chicken Game
Cleopatra
Cops and Donuts
Creature From the Black Lagoon

The handle on the Logic board is the best way to determine the difference. Swing handle:044/Fixed small handle: 039

actually the difference between the blue and red is the SAS version. version 5.xx is red and version 6.xx is blue. both are on 3902.

044 boards and games i believe are only sas 6.0 and above

zarobhr, i agree. thanks for calcification.
039 is a great platform.
we now used only 044 which cost more but offers more features.
