I  used TaxAct for the first time last year. I gotta say, it got the job done and I'll probably use it again this year.
That said, I have to admit I do like the tools that come along with TaxCut and Turbo Tax. Though I've never
actually found any missed opportunities, it does give you peace of mind to have the program do a double check
and offer suggestions. IMO

I'm just like knagl. I buy the TurboTax CD each year, usually from Costco. I tried the online version twice, but didn't like having my data stored on their server. I also tried Tax Cut a long time ago but found it to be a cheap clone of TurboTax that was much harder to navigate. I also use Quicken and use TurboTax's import function to suck in all of my information for the year. There are only a few things that don't work because Quicken doesn't have enough specific line-item choices in the category assignment tax drop down list.

Unfortunately, Intuit has gotten quite greedy this year and has raised the cost of TurboTax quite a bit. They also tried to limit the number of returns and printed copies at first, but early customers go so pissed that they changed it to allow multiple prints and returns. You still pay for each e-file. In addition, it seems to me that TurboTax's quality has declined in recent years. With all these changes I'm ready to jump ship.

I've never tried TaxAct. It sounds like it's missing the final audit and error checks. How does it compare to TurboTax in other areas? Can it import Quicken tax export files?

I have to agree with David on this one. Intuit has been getting greedy with there software. I have been using both Quicken and Turbo-Tax for decades.
First they "Sunset" Quicken every three years so you can no longer use the most useful part of it (downloading on-line data from your banks and credit cards).
I was using the 2006 version of Quicken, and after all the bad reviews I have read about the newer versions being crap, i have decided to try another company (Moneydance).

I have also been using Turbo-Tax for more than a decade, and have seen a steady increase in there E-filing fees! What a ripoff they have become! I believe last year I spent $35 just in Filing Fees through Turbo-Tax!

This year I am gong to try an On-Line company that a friend recommended ... www.freetaxusa.com
The Federal Forms and e-filing are both FREE (For adjusted Gross Incomes of $56K or Less - $10 for all others)! 
The State Forms are $10, and the e-filing is also FREE!
 
Sure beats what Intuit Turbo-Tax charges for there software and E-filing!

So the bottom line is that Intuit just lost a long time customer for being so greedy!

Intuit has actually been slowly losing my business as well. I stopped e-filing when they raised their fees a couple of years ago. I stopped buying new versions of Quicken several years ago after they started their "sunset" policy, as you describe it.

I enter every transaction I make daily, anyway. It only takes a couple of minutes or less each evening. I've been using Quicken for so long (almost 20 years) that virtually every business/person with whom I spend money are all memorized along with the categories associated with the things that they sell; I only need type the first two or three letters of the name and the rest of the transaction details drop in place. I only enter a dollar amount, and every so often, change the category for a transaction. All I have to do when my statements arrive is click off all the transactions and I'm reconciled in under a minute. Half the time I've already checked my online statements during the month and already have the transactions marked as 'c'.

The only updates to Quicken that I've made in the last six years were versions that I didn't have to pay for; that's happened a couple of times, so I'm running a fairly new version and have no issues with not having paid for it. I don't like being bullied into buying new software every three years. If another new version doesn't "accidentally" appear on my computer, I'll have no problems running the current version long after the online transactions disappear. It's too bad. I really like Quicken and don't intend to stop using it. I'd have no problem paying for newer versions if they went back to actually improving their product instead of being lazy and using gimmicks to force new purchases.

+1 on the Intuit greediness, and their crappy testing along with their failure to address major bugs. I upgraded to Quicken 2k at one time, but there were bugs and the bug fixes weren't forthcoming in a timely manner, so I reverted back to v4 (which came out in 1994).

The biggest issue I had with 2k was it trashed all my data when it converted the file format during the upgrade procedure. Good thing I had backups, or I would have lost 6+ years of data. 3 months after I called support, they still didn't have a fix.

I have to agree with you there. There are bugs in the version that I use and they don't get fixed with auto-update downloads. I just work around them. I keep many backup copies of my records but have never archived previous years. I did start a new file back around 1995, but I can still search all transactions from that point forward and that can be useful. I have around 25 thousand transactions in the file, and to their credit, my database has never crashed.
