I have a 2c 5x pay that was working perfectly for months, I powered it on the other day and it stopped registering coins.  I have replaced the optics, the mpu, and the motherboard with no success.  I can take the optics from this machine and put it in another machine and it works fine.  I have tried clearing the ram with no success.  If I unplug the optics and the plug it back in and turn the machine on, I get an error 21, push reset, close the door, the error is cleared but will still not register coins.  Is there something else that I can check?

thanks

I have the comparitor wired so that it will accept any coin, not sure what is called, but I wired the rake looking thing so that it is out of the way.  I do have power supplied to the comparitor, the wire harness to it is good I checked it in another machine.

Does it work when you push the little button on the optic?

Have you checked the compairitor in another machine?
Is the Sample Coin seated properly?

The comparitor is good, but I wired it so all coins will pass through the comparitor and into the optics, all coins are deposited into the hopper.  It's odd that it just quit working hissy fit Scratch Head, maybe I will turn it into a kegerator  applause applause, that way I won't have to leave the room to get a beer.  Thanks for the assistance.

Even though the "rake" is pulled back and the comparitor will accept anything ---- the comparator still has to send the optics a signal that a good coin is coming through. With this configuration if the comparator or the optics is bad the coin will fall through to the hopper and not the coin tray. It sounds as if the coin comparator or the optics is the problem. If you install a comparator with the rake operation normal and the coin drops through to the tray the comparator is bad if it drops through to the hopper the optics is usually the problem. Hope this helps.

If you want to determine if your optics are working:  There again depends on the Sp chip you are using :  Open the door, press the self test botton unti the #1 appears in the coins played window, #digits should appear in the winner paid   10-1...remove the coin comparitor and put a piece of thick paper folded so it will slide into the optics where the coin would normally go.  the display shouild toggle from a 1 to a zero, press service button or reset key switch  11-1 appears in WP  do the same, should toggle also if you press the white button on the optic board  it should toggle, Press service button again 12-1 appears  same thing  if all this works then your optics are good.  If you want to have any coin accepted there is a way to do that and not have to do anything to the coin comparitor. On the ABC optic board, remove Q-2 on some versions and Q-4 on others. on the older style 'S' slot optics remove diode up near the timer. Now you can put an IMONEX,mechanical , or a coin chute directly into the optics. and it will work.  Hope this helps

PS  you can swap the whole unit into the other machine and see if the problem follows???

Excellent answers Jim,
The last time I saw someone give well informed answers like that,

Alright, One silly question. If you rig the machine to accept ANY coin, What do you do when your hopper if filled with dimes, nickles and pennies and you have a quarter pinwheel?
It wont payout any coins so what's the point?  Scratch Head
If your only purpose is to  use it as a piggy bank, Why not just get a big jar for your change?  frying pan frying pan

Well the machine worked for about 5 minutes, then it stopped taking coins again.  I set the comparitor set the if it senses a bad coin it goes to the tray.  Not sure what to do now.

Jim,
Thanks for the info, the optics test good, and the whole unit, optics and comparitor work in another machine without issue.

Neonkiss,
I don't use the machine as a piggy bank, I just figured that if I rigged it, as long a any quarter, or half dollar, depending on what machine I am on, the coin would be registered.  Maybe that is not the best idea, so they are all back to normal now.

I was just trying to make a point! not that anyone would actually install a coin chute to eliminate the coin comparator. The ANY coin I was referring to was the type of coin you are using in your comparator,The comparator will still reject all other coins and pass the ones that it should. It will also cutout after the max. coins are inserted. The modification to the ABC board was mainly to allow a different coin mech. to be used in place of a cc-16. Back in the day casinos' used to keep the comparator's or wholesalers used to take them out and sell them, they had a real good resale value. At one time it was hard to find used ,working comparators .  So a lot of machines had Imonex acceptors in them  or the older mechanicall coin mechs .

Sorry for the confusion

with a known good comparator and that feedback ckt. out of the loop it just seemed that alot of intermittent coin in problems went away!

Yes,
Jim is trying to ask you if you swapped the whole mech unit with another machine, does the problem follow it?

It's a good way to see if the mech is the problem or if it's something else...

Yep I broke the comparitor, sometimes I might be a brute, while moving the coin comparitor between machines, I broke it somehow, or it was going bad.  I put another comparitor in and the machine is accepting coins, the suspect comparitor will not work in any machine now.

I thank everyone for their assitance, even Neonkiss for cheering me up while troubleshooting.  Does anyone have a couple of CC-16 for sale?

thanks again

Jon     check the voltage on the big cap inside the comparitor, if its less than 20vdc , replace the cap  it usually fixes a lot of problems.

Jim,

I took the cover of the mech, the big capacitor is gray, this one has a big dent in it.  To test the voltage do I just use a multimeter on it while it is in the machine, positive to one side, negative on the other?

Jon    make sure your meter is set up for dc voltages, observe the polarity, and becareful  and you should get the reading.  also after you do this, if the reading is good, you may want to  remove the coin comp. and inspect  the back side of the logic board around the plug area for cracked or cold solder joints. If your voltage is good and no signs of bad soldering then you may have to replace the cc.

Jim
