Very easy to do.
It is on the MPU
MPU is located behind the hopper. (no need to remove the hopper)

Open door
Look for the mpu cover/tray behind the Hopper

There is a volume control on the Top-Left edge  of the MPU tray, Volume control  is normally blue.

I had that same question and until I found out about the knob I taped a folded up piece of paper towel over the speaker to muffle the sound.  After I found the knob I had a good laugh at myself.

Just a tip for some people that haven't played around with the S+ volume:

When you want to adjust the volume level:   with the machine open, find the small white button on the coin in optics board. Push one time to put a credit on the machine, press spin button , while game is operational  reach in and adjust the volume to desired level  ( you have to be Quick to do this, but its easily done) it just eliminates opening and closing the door to see if you have it where you want it .

Hope this helps

That's good to know.  I never knew you could get it to spin with the door open.  Makes dusting the reels easier too ;.)

Just to add, the volume will seem a bit softer to your ears when you use this method because you will be behind the open door, so adjust the volume to be slightly lower than the level that you desire to get your intended level when the door is closed.

For someone who may stumble on this thread in the future and wonder what volume knob we're talking about because they don't have one in their S+, it should be mentioned that the 16mhz S+ MPU boards do not have a volume knob on them.  The volume on those are controlled through menus on the slot machine.

The other option to test sound is push the selft test switch until you see 50 displayed on the player display
Then press the spin reels switch, it will beep each time you press the spin reels switch. that way you can adjust it with the door closed, with the latch up or open.
Depending on how well the door is adjusted you may or may not need to hold the latch open.
