Keep putting them in and let it keep counting. As long as the display is counting up, it is paying out the jackpot won. It will stop when the jackpot amount is reached.

Sounds more like your hopper is paying out a very high "hit" and the hopper settings are too high possibly?
You're going to have to keep refilling the hopper until the "hit" is paid out.
I'm just surprised that the bar/bar/bar hit is taking so long to pay out?
Something else is amiss.

After the hopper finishes paying this win out, you need to do a "hopper test".

Has your hopper stopped turning?
If not, did you check the YOUR hopper wiring versus the drawing posted on Reply#19 ?

Do a "Reel Strip Test" too...make sure the symbols stop correctly on the payline.
What game is installed and what SP and SS chips you're using?
The more info you can give us, the better we can help you out.

yes the hopper is still turns continously.  and the wiring looks ok to me... but I am far from an electrical genius

What game is installed and what SP and SS chips you're using?       I dont know how to find this out... can you tell me what to look for.

Is it possible that the hopper SSR is bad.

Yes, Barry posted that 3 years ago but I missed it when he posted it.
Sounds like he swapped the relay with another one
and the runaway hopper problem went away that time.

You have an extra one to try?

Place a WTB ad in the "Classifieds" section of NLG and hopefully someone will spot it and send you one!

But if the coin paid window is still increasing the game is still paying a win. If it was just turning and the meter was not increasing you have a problem. Which is it?
