I believe I had heard, so my understanding is, the 13" GK cabinet cannot be upgraded to an 044 platform whereas my 17" cabinet can. I'm not sure because I have never seen what gets converted or what the size is of the new platform is but, with the 3902 platform they're both the same size.
So my question is, if they still use the same tray after the 044 conversion why couldn't the 13" cabinet also upgrade to the 044 platform?
Is it even a possibilty?
Thanks, Jim

Yes it's possible with the right motherboard.  The IO tray plugs into the motherboard on the 13" GK cabinet too which is why one reason why a 17" motherboard will not work.  I've seen some 044 motherboards for 13" GK and older 19" GK cabinets on ebay awhile back, so they're around.  Some of the vendors on NLG may have one as well?

Cliff, those were Bar Top Backplanes you seen on eBay, they are not the same as the old style GK (not GK+) Backplanes and it is not possible to bolt in parts to make a 13" or 19" GK (not GK+) an enhanced platform, Forhouse did it but ended up just using the cabinet and replacing button deck harnesses, monitor (TS controller) I/O's and wiring and such too. So can it be done.. Yes, cost efficient... No, better to  just get a 17" (or 19" Panda) cabinet

Here are links with pics of the different backplanes and I/O board

Thanks Jim!  I almost bought one, glad I didn't now.  They looked like a drop in replacement for the 38/39XX motherboard, but I noticed they lacked the ribbon cable connector from the motherboard to the comm board so I passed it up.  Thanks for the clarification.
