After installing my backlit reels this weekend, I got inspired when I read posts here where people painted their regular reels to make them backlit.  Following Bunker and YoEddy threads, I decided to make it a Mother's Day project.

I took transparencies I had made for button legends and traced out each symbol.  Then, I cut out the image on the transparency, flipped it over and covered it with blue painter's tape.  Then, using the transparency as a guide, I trimmed the blue tape, peeled it off and put it on the back of the reel strip.  Had to make just 6 templates, one for each symbol and then keep covering with tape and trimming.  Then, taped the strips to a cardboard box and spray painted with black semi gloss for plastics.  As soon as the paint fully dries, I'll post pictures in my machine.  Got to go get ready now to take mom to dinner and a movie!

Took about an hour to make the templates, tape them, cut them out and affix them to the back of each reel.

It took longer to drive to Lowes and shake the can than it did to spray the box.

So far so good ... I'll post the final look after the paint fully dries.

One more tip ... cut one of the corners of your templates before you tape it ... makes taking the tape off a lot easier.

Thanks PB.

Just dropped mom off after dinner and a movie.  We saw The Great Gatsby.  That was the best nap I've had in a long time. rotflmao
