Hexbreaker keychip trouble, from a newbie

I've had a Hexbreaker slot machine for a couple of years and had no trouble with.  However, I wanted to change the payback percentages.  I ordered a Keychip 28.  It arrived today, and so I browsed on the forums here, and it seemed to be a simple procedure:
(1)  Remove motherboard from game
(2)  Remove base chip from motherboard
(3)  Insert keychip into slot where base chip was
(4)  Reinsert motherboard into game, power up

However, when powering back up with the keychip in, all I get is the confetti screen and the game won't do anything.  On the motherboard lights, the red is flashing.  Definitely not a good sign!

To make matters worse, when I put the base chip back in, it still goes to this confetti screen and is stuck w/ same flashing red light on motherboard.

Any help you all could provide would be appreciated.

I'm sure someone who is in the know here, will be able to tell you, you've either got a bad key chip or the wrong one for your machine.

Hopefully the key chip/base chip was not installed upside down.

Were all of the legs inserted into each of the socket holes?
No bent pins or broken pins?

Or as lindam1 stated, perhaps the wrong chip.

Key chip 22 is what I use . I once got confetti by mixing up the game chips but I put them back in the right order and no harm done . P.B. is this a 044 board  with adaptor plate or 3902 board?

I also use keychip 22. Never have used a 28 on an I game

Most of the time it's a 40 or a 22.  I was recently informed that some titles may take a 17.

 I have the Hexbreaker Game  and Key 22 is what i set it up with .   Its a great game ( for any one who has one when you get the mirror bonus  touch the cat it really pisses him off )  LOL   P.B.

The red light blinking is a definite sign that your base chip is backward, or you don't have all the pins in the socket. Pull the base chip back out and make shore the notch on the chip is in the same direction as the outline on the board, and that none of the legs are bent under. If you are still having problems check to make shore one of your other chips or simm cards isn't loose. Key 28 is for the newer flash boards I don't know if it will work on a 3902 board. I use a Key 2040 for 3902 games that use simm cards.

Jason I have a Key 17 I'll make you a real good deal on it.  It's really minty, rarely used, as a matter of fact never used, I never found a need for it. But I think every body should have one, I have around (500) M27C4002 eproms I could mass produce them and give JJ a run for the money.

I think I'll just sign out and take the Big Truck to Phoenix tonight, I've got a road grader on my low bed trailer.

Hi Buzz Key 2040 is an all in one Key chip and clear chip. It comes in handy for game changes, or if you have a new machine you want to clear out, and then set up also you can just select key chip from the onscreen options. I can send you one if you want to try it.

As for the keychip, I had that in backwards.  That is no big deal as I can get another one easily.  The major problem is with the game chip.  During my re-installation, I broke a pin off!   

I'm very mad at myself for making such a clumsy error.  I'm at a loss as to how to get my machine going again, and also don't want to break any forum rules on my second day here.

pins can be tacked on to an eprom with a soldering iron if you have a bit of skill and a ton of luck.  depending on how long you had the chip(s) in backwards you might not have burned it; igt keychips are a bit more tolerant to it than some others.  you can post up your chip numbers (game and base) and use pm's for anything you aren't sure about posting to the general public; no one will flame you too hard as a noob looking for assistance.     you can always post a "want to buy (WTB)" ad in the classified section for anything you need and the vendors on the main page can hook you up with just about anything.

a few notes on pulling chips...use a chip puller made for it - some disagree but when used correctly they work pretty well ususally.  i've personally bent the shit outta chips using one many times but have had many more perfectly pulled chips.  i've seriously pulled thousands of chips over the years.

i use a small bent flat tipped screwdriver on a regular basis.  there are a few different configurations to the bend and blade shape used that are simply personal preference.

a staple puller is also preferred by many and is similar to the shape of my personally shaped bent screwdriver but the screwdriver is on a much smaller scale.  bent screwdrivers are handy little tools for the pouch if working on slots; i've burned through 3 in my time as a tech.  also a small pair of channel or ignition pliers is vital...but i digress  

for training my new techs i use a chip that has no value to the casino and drop it on our tile floor in the shop; step on it firmly until all the legs are totally fubar then hand it to the new tech along with a low to zero value board with a correctly sized socket and tell them to do whatever it takes to make it fit and bring it back to me.  doesn't matter how long it takes them to do it, i've had some take days.  once they bring it back to me i'll closely inspect their work and pull it back out of the socket and drop the chip back on the floor and do it again.  no matter how i judge their work they're all going to get to do it at least 3 times because no matter what they do, if they're going to work on slots regularly they will  bend the shit out of some chip legs so they better be able to handle it.  i only allow them this training once they've shown enough skill and interest to warrant it; not everyone makes it that far for many different reasons.    sometimes it seems like torture and i'm being a prick but they'll figure it out later down the road or they'll know that when it gets to that point they aren't going to try. g/l  

edit:  oh yeah and i almost forgot...dude don't beat yourself up on fuxing up some chips.  that shit happens sometimes.  always remember that no matter what you break or burn in your machines we can get it fixed; might be pricey but it can be done.

Your not in as bad of shape as you think, if your Base chip is a I0000725 I just happen to have a extra one. PM me your address and don't be supprised if while the package is in the mail the base chip gives birth to a Key 22. Just as a note the 40 pin chip is not the game chip it's the base chip, take a closer look at your board and you will see two more chips G0000948 game 1 and game 2.

Don't worry about getting in trouble, our NLG cops are pussy cats, I think I have that right. Two rules you don't want to break #1 Do not upload any eprom files to this site, even I won't do that.   #2 never ever in the open forum say our webmaster Joey is a dick head, it's OK to think it just don't say it.

My beloved Hexbreaker is now working again!!  HUGE thanks to Buzz, for sending me the two chips I needed.  They arrived today.  Ran the keychip to get the payouts set to where I wanted, and then the base chip and voila it is back in action!  Happy days are here again!!
