Quick Question About Game EPROM

I need some quick advise: I currently have a 731 game eprom in my S+. I recently ordered a Triple Cherry Game Kit. Included with the kit, is a reel eprom SS7828 and a game eprom SP1271. Do I need to change the game eprom as well, or will the 731 game eprom work with the Triple Cherry Game? Thanks Guys!! Shawn

The SP731 will work fine. Both SP chips work with type 0, 1, 4, & 5 games. Triple Cherry is a type 0 game (no special features).

You might want to go ahead a migrate to the SP1271 if you have it though.

1.  Credits count up faster.
2.  Separate credit and hopper limits.

Make sure you have a SET chip before you do this or you may not be able to enable your bill validator....

oops!!! yeah, what ^^^^^ said.  If you don't have a SET chip changing from SP791 to SP1271 will disable your DBV.

If you just change your reel chip and continue to use the 731 you should be fine.
On the 731 there is also SONG Selection for certain themes. These were dropped in the 1271 in leiu of more accounting features.
If you have a progressive display you can set the options with the 731 setup menus but with the 1271 you will need the SET 90 chip to set these options.

A Set026 and a Set90 are good things to have around, while you are at it I would recommnend you pick up a Clear chip.

A Set026 chip will enable you to enable the bill validator with both the 731 and the 1271 and it allows you to change the denomination to a nickle with the 731 and a penny with the 1271.
Even if your machine is setup for quarters its nice to be able to slip in a dollar and get 100 credits - after all this is home gaming.

A Set090 will not work with a 731 you will get a 65_4 error which means wrong-chip dude, try again (ok perhaps not verbaitum from the manual but same intent).
A Set090 will do everything a Set026 does + set progressive features when used with a 1271.

When changing major revisions of chips such as a 731 to 1271 you will get some errors that mean CMOS corruption but these are easily cleared and life goes on. However if you go backwards this transition is not always smooth and sometimes the errors don't clear. Also when your battery dies on the MPU board (and they do) you might get some unclearable errors. A Clear chip is then used to wipe the CMOS and bring the machine back to Factory Settings. Not that it should be a big deal at home but all the accounting registers are zero'ed out. So if you collect statistics about how many coins you have pounded in, how many wins etc you might want to write these down in your journal.

Generally speaking if you are buying a Set chip from a vendor the clear is usually just a few bucks extra as a set. At the very least your not paying for shipping twice.

A Big Thank You to all of you! I just might change out the game eprom. I bought two ZIFF low profile sockets awhile back and was scared to change the game eprom. I do need the other chips, being that my S+ has a bill validator and if that goes down, I'll have a bunch of mad family members at me! Any recommendations where I can get the other chips from?

Just to be sure, I need the following: (Correct Me If I Missed One) SET 026 Chip, SET90 Chip, and a Clear Chip.

One other question: Can the coin in, coin out and coin drop meters, that are located on the top right side of my S+, be reset via the menu options or reset some other way?

that means completely dis-assembling the individual meters and their components.
I tried two of them, believe me, it's not easy to do...
The numbered gear sprockets inside are small as heck and
MUST be lined up to mesh with another set of gear sprockets that are even smaller    perfectly,  in order to work.
Plus the numbered (0-9) gear sprockets rotate so very easily on its shaft and
requires you to adhere a piece of scotch tape to hold the numbers in place
while you assemble the other smaller sprockets w/shaft.
You need steady hands, a magnifying light, and a very good set angled tweezers and
patience like you wouldn't believe or you'll end up throwing all the little pieces as far away into the bushes as you can...
My suggestion, go buy a brand new set of meters...it's WAY easier...

I tried using a dremel with a sprocket. You are only allowed to reverse the meter - you cannot advance forward...if the meter has 600,000 credits on it, it will take about three hours to do...plus the ratcheting lever (sort of like a clock thingy) will be so worn out that you'll still be throwing the thing into the bushes.  It's somewhat easier to completely dis-assemble the meter and put it back together...but you have to have the patience of a clockmaker.

Ok I now have the set chip that I need to install my SP1271 eprom. Is there any common errors that will show up after a game change? Just wondering because I'm not sure how to clear them if one shows up.

It depends on what you are upgrading from.
A 731 to 1271 is a major change as the format of the CMOS changes between the two.
The first error you will get is a 64-3 error which indicates your cmos is corrupt.
Turing the jackpot reset button should turn that into a 64-2 error. Then pressing the self test button will clear that to a 65 error.

The 65 error what you get after a game change. If you click on Ricks FAQs you will get all the instructions on how to go from the 65 to a complete game change.

You probably don't care about the bookkeeping numbers in the machine, but if you do like to track that information, write down the figures before you swap chips, because changing from the old style meters in the SP731 to the new style in the SP1271 will zero-out a most of the data.

How do I get the reel and music to play on the SP1271 eprom? Also, the "reel knock" sound is gone. Also, how do I set the credit limit / hand pay option and keep the credit light on? i noticed the credit light goes off after about 30 seconds. Thanks for all your help!!
