flashing 80 error - Triple Jackpot Triple Blazing 7s

Hey guys,

Have an 80 error flashing 3 times a second. 

From reading around on these forums, it appears this is a ROM checksum error for the personality roms.

I checked U18 and U20 and they are marked:

E693511X-05

Any chance of fixing this?

reseat the U18 and U20, then Perform a complete Saferam clear and see if it returns.  If they are not original chips, then they may be too slow.  They need to be 150ns or faster(-150, -125, -120 etc).

If you need a set of Saferam clear chips, Jim at Blueridge has them.

then yes, and if it doesn't work then your mains are too new for that method.

I had the exact same problem.  I had to have the personality chips replaced.   Did this just happen without touching the mpu or were you doing a game change?  Mine got fried when I was replacing them.   

It is true what they about static - 

Now I ground myself and I make sure I touch the cabinet and try not to touch the legs at all when doing a game change.

I used a rewritable eeprom of course for this and a backed up SS file.
Once I wrote the data onto the chip, I installed it...worked perfectly.
Then I removed it , put it down on my desk.
I took a balloon and rubbed it on my head (What's left of my hair on my head stood up...lol)
Then I dragged my feet across the living room carpet, bent down a grabbed the eprom...
nothing happened...I stuck the eprom back in the machine...
when I turned it on, I never saw my display lights act like that.
They looked like they were an episode of "Girls Gone Wild"....
Totally garbled and flashing...lol

If flashing lights looks like Girls Gone Wild to you ..... you need to a. Go back to health class, b. get your glasses checked......

You didn't do that did you?? I'd be afraid I'd damage the board.   -  Now the funny thing is I work on computers all the time and don't care a thing about static.  I guess it's cause I know I can get parts??

I think I'll go put on those flannel pajamas with the vinyl feet - run all around the carpet and grab some chips and see if I get the girls gone wild on my machine.

No this just happened when turned on.  Not that I haven't learned my lesson in the past regarding ESD.

On another note, I reseated U18 and U20 and did a hard reset but no go.

I guess the ROMs are bad.

With replacing the roms?

I have the same problem with 80  -  not the proms - as I swapped them out all 6 of the proms from a working board - the proms from the bad board worked in the good board - the proms from the good board did not work in the bad board - so the board is at fault - sockets checkout.  what else could be the problem on the board?     Bally 5500.

I'm guessing a bad battery or bent pin on the MPU board leading edge.
But I'm sure you've checked those.
The other thing too is the jumpers next to the sockets.
The socket jumpers must match the eprom devices.
When I say "match" I mean the eprom sizes - whether they are 256 or 512k's.

all the proms are the same size and speed - been down that road before.  it definetly is the board- just wanted to know which IC may be envolved.

Board level repairs are easy when one has a $4,000.00 board tester...LOL
I have one for an Universal but I'm still restoring it.
It doesn't work exactly the way I want it to.
It's gonna be one minuscule component somewhere on the board that's
out of specs due to heat and age - which one? That's anybody's guess. 
However, having said that - my guess would be any component that has a heat sink attached to it.
Sometimes you can hold up a bright lamp behind the board and actually see
the "browning" or "yellowing" of long overheated components onto the particle board itself.
Should you have spare boards and IC parts - those would be the first I'd change.
Chances are those particular discolored components are way past their "prime".
