The quick way to manage coinage is to weigh it.
I am surprized the cops showed. Usually they show up next day for even B&E's.

It seems that even cops get towed sometimes too judging by their comments and helpfulness!!!  bust gut laughing bust gut laughing bust gut laughing

The kids were being Cocky, and most likely were illegally parked originally, but I agree that if there are no other prior notices in the form of a sign, etc., that pennies are legal tender! Period! That clerk would be paid while counting the pennies anyhow, so what's the problem?

I can attest that there were times as a starving college student, that coins (Mostly Pennies!) were gathered up to get a few items at Taco Bell! I tried to be nice and stack them neatly on the counter to aid in counting. They appreciated it, and once in a while I was given an order much larger than I ordered!

Today is similar, except that I panic if someplace doesn't take credit cards!!! bust gut laughing bust gut laughing bust gut laughing

Beautiful!! I'm going to have to look up the statute to see if it is true that if repayment of a debt is offered and refused, the debt is considered legally settled (and the money is no longer owed).

The key difference between the situation above and a store that posts that they will not accept certain forms of payment is that no notification was made to the debtor that restrictions would be placed on his form of payment prior to incurring the debt.

Yes, the towing service had to take the pennies in the end.
I believe that he was giving his friends cash to pay them back for the pennies that they contributed to the cause.

I was sued about 15 years ago for doing a favour for a neighbor ($1,500.00) and in the state of CALIFORNIA if you do a favour for someone you assume all responsibility. I paid her off in pennies and the San Francisco mint had to order the pennies for me.  I left the bank with a shopping cart full of pennies and delivered them in my truck. This is great to teach our kids not to do favours in California, what a joke. No wonder people are afraid to help eachother.  Too bad PAY PAL won't pay in pennies to some people.  Tim
