there are 3? different cpu boards for the IGT S+ correct?  8 mg  10 and 16.     10 mg do not have the sound mod.  and require Type 2 games.    Am I getting close?   can some defines what the differ boards are and how they are used?

heres where I get confused - I have 2 boards that match desc of 10mhz yet they are quite different - I placed 2 10mhz  boards side to side to show one of the major differ (the diodes CR1 thru CR6 run side by side on one board and parallel on the other - the one board has a missing C44 just to the right of the bit swx - the other board does not have that cap.  1st question - whats the difference?  2nd - what is the cap I am missing? also missing a U49 above the c44.

YYYep! You're getting close! LOL

I've only heard of 10MHz and 16MHz   MPU boards though...

The 10MHz board can play other game types besides "Type 2"....

I've only heard of 10 and 16 mhz boards.  The 10Mhz board has dip switches that were used in certain Sp game proms.  Also has a volume control knob.  The 16Mhz board has no dip switches nor a volume control knob, volume is controlled through software.  Also has improved sound chip, but is subject to quite the annoying static noise.

Urban Legend has it that 8mhz boards do exist. I have never seen one, or know anyone who has one but what I have heard is that they were the first ones out after the S series. They apparently do not support a bill validator. Functionally they are not any different than the 10mhz other than the validator support..... I would consider them a non event.

I updated my original question and added pictures of 2 different 10 mhz boards -

Just a note: The little rectangle, silverish transistor components will usually say 10MHz on them....

There ARE variations between the 10MHz boards...
IGT had the techs do updates to them which you'll see in different board versions.
However, most of the variations between the board versions I think-
were just better trace paths and minor component upgrades.

If you look at the newest pinball boards (Alltek comes to mind)
the changes were greatly different from the older boards made in the late 70's.
These changes are pretty neat...they do basically the same thing but are much smaller in size and more efficient.
Take that same logic with the newer versions of the 10MHz S+ boards...
Slot tech board designers were constantly upgrading the versions w/newer components.

ADD>> sometimes the color of the boards are different too...
I have two S+ 10MHz boards that from a short distance, you'd swear they are not the same.
The waffleboards were dyed different shades of green...almost look yellow...

Hi Barry

Please post the part numbers and i will see if i can check or post close up pictures of the board and the missing cap/ic location.
Wild gues for now is that its a reel driver IC for reel 4 or 5.

have no part numbers as the components are not there.   both parts are located close to the bit switch.

Hi Barry,
According to an S+manual published by Liberty Belle Books in 1986>>>

U49 is an IC that takes care of the shift/strobe register from the CPU to the reels .
The number on top of the IC is : 4094
The IGT part number is: 32010890

I could not find a "C44"...
However, a "U44" is also an IC chip called a Darlington
That is a driver chip with numbers ULN2003 on top.
The number on top of this IC is :32013290.

I will take a look at some boards tomorrow and see what I can find...
I also have a newer boards schematics at work that I can refer to
and I will post my findings as soon as I get a chance.

I took the easy way looked at a board to get the IC number and the Cap value.

That is the only thing I hate about SMD/SMT parts. They are too small to read without a microscope.

I have the electronic schematics and diagrams for S+ and S2000 on CD

Cap value should match with voltage being equal or higher, EX: 35V or 50v will also work.

Barry   there are many versions of the S+ board  04/06/07/08/09    #755-057-04/06   is the one with the diodes going north and south,  #755-057-07/08/09 is the one with the diodes going east and west.  on this board--- U-1,K-7, C-46,C-47,SW-1Y-2U-55/U-49 were noted as optional not used on all assemblies.
These boards are 10 meg boards.  can be used in any S+ and interchangeable with the  04/06 boards, also 10 meg.    photo attached.

16 meg boards  use the Y-2 and U-49 and associated components for the various new tones under cpu command according to the schematics all these components are associated with the sound circuits..    photo attached

wow - I started going thru all my 10 mhz boards and found all the variations as mentioned -  found the c44 and on my boards 10uf 35v - seems to be a common problem as several boards I bought recently were missing that Cap.  the U49 is a Sound Chip?  I assume it is needed. Anyway thanks to all - hopefully others have learned something about these boards - good thing they are reliable. Karma to ALL.
