not sure where to post this as I didn't see a Universial video poker section. I'm used to dealing with video games so this is a little new for me.

I've got a draw poker model  HR9267-5 (Dueces wild) that's not booting up it appears. Monitor comes on, but no pic. I've done normal things like check fuses. It looks like the card cage ontop is getting 120v to the power supply, and is putting out -12 +12 +5 There is what appears to be a service key switch on the side, and turning the key does nothing.

There are two unplugged wires down by the coin bucket mixer. green, and black. Has 5v on it, but not plugged into anything, possible interlock?

I'm kinda at a loss atm, are there pdf manuals for these games?

Thanks

Kevin

Well after pulling the card cage out to look for loose proms, I found that U35 74HC00 is blown. Hopefully that's all the went out. It's on the prom board with the battery, which brings up another question. Looks like someone did a poor hack job replacement on the battery. it's using a 3.6v Lithium 1/2 AA is that the correct size/voltage?

Thanks,

Kevin

A picture of the machine and board would be helpful.
I have experience with only one Uni poker machine. Yours may be very different.
So far all Universal's (slots and 1 poker) I've seen use NiCad batteries, not lithium.
As far as manuals go, I still have an operators manual for the model 8304. It's not much, but best I can do.
Check the "Submit a new file" tab.

Hi Guys

Never knew Universal did video products (apart from the Emax but that only came out when it became Aruze)
Post some pics if you can please.
K+ for the manual

I'm at my mom's trying to use her mac, and I'm failing.. Here's a link to the photo album with pictures in it. Sorry, I don't have my camera handy so the pics didn't come out so good.

Never seen one of those. Looks like a 1993-1994 year machine. (looking at the boards) Don't think my manuals will help with this one.
Universal was famous for having push button/toggle switch RAM clears. See if there is one or more tiny push buttons on the boards that is accessable to the operator when boards are seated.
Older Universal slots had a single push button. Uni Ultra slots (1994-1996) had three little push buttons.
My 8304 poker machine had a tiny toggle switch.
In every machine holding the button or toggle in while powering up would clear the RAM and reset the machine.

Corky, what type of battery does your XT machine have? NiCad or lithium?

Yeah i t's got three small push buttons, I just assumed they were breakers. But that makes sense. The thing that bugs me, is that the 74hc00 seems to goto an external plug for something. Hard to say without schematics. It does look like the proms have Checksums, so I'll be pulling them to check. Then I guess I'll have to get the logic probe out.

Looks like someone has changed out the card cage at some point. There is a sticker on it that says G:0 T:0 D:.25 Deuces. The Key inside states G:0 T:0 D: .05 Jacks. So I assume the key is for Jacks or better. Also it looks like there are two cards that you can place a key on. One is not populated.

Hmm...

I don't know if you've already looked at this, but it looks like the 110/220 switch is set for 220.  You didn't post your location -- are you outside the US?  If you're in the US, you'd likely want it set for 110.  If it is and I'm looking at the picture wrong, my apologies.

Yeah I thought that at first too. However after removing the voltage locking plate, it was definately in the 110v position. Like I said I have voltages coming from the power supply to the card cage. The monitor powers up, external lighting lites up. the game just won't boot.

I pulled the 8088 processor and checked it today, it checks good.

Still digging, but I need to find a schematic.

I recall that some Universal poker machines had a Dallas key chip. Without the chip the machine would not boot.
Does anyone know where this chip would be on the board??

Alright I'm back home with it, and with my camera. So I can get better pics.

Ok so far the florescent lights work, the monitor works (no image), and the candle lights, or rather blinks long and slow.

There is no test mode switch that I can find, just a service switch on the side.

I have confirmed date of MFG is 1993.

Still trying to figure out what the two wires coming from the hopper are for. Black, and Green. Ashai Seiko DH-750 probably a hopper full switch option, or overflow bin?

Have replaced the blown 74HC00 No change.

This is the key that is missing.

It's on a board that joins as a pair.

There is also an 8 pin IC missing from a socket. Not sure if there is supposed to be one there or not.

The other boards.

So if all else fails, who might be able to repair one of these card sets?

talon2000,
Check the pin circled in the picture. I noticed it looks folded over.

Haven't heard back yet from Talon2000. That would be great if that is the problem!
He told me thru pm's that he thought he might have corrupted chips. I told him I haven't found Uni poker eproms anywhere.
So then I looked closely at his chips to record the numbers. That's when I saw it.

It took me a second to find it, but yes it was bent out. I got that all fixed, and was hoping that would be it.. No such luck.

Haven't had much time to start figuring things out. Other than I should have paid more attention in microprocessor class.

I pulled all the cards out of the backplane, except the video card. Thinking I should get atleast something to show on the screen. Nothing.

So I checked the reset line, and it was low. address lines seem to be toggling just fine.

So then I plugged the boards back in. Once I hook up the reset line on the last board, it sends out a reset signal every few seconds. So something it causing it to reset. Don't know what yet.

Good eye by the way. It took me a second looking at it to even see it.

Next question is.. Does anyone have a kobetron to check the roms? As I found out the CRC #'s are Kobetron #'s so using my stag programmer to get a crc doesn't match. Unless there is a conversion from kobetron #'s to regular crc checks. Or possibly a bin download of a test rom?

I have a ton of them in reserve, but only add when it is a perfect match. I guess that is more fun. Maybe some time I will make some time to do an emoticon adding fest.

Ok, just a couple more things to knock of the checklist..

I did go ahead and hook up the monitor to a pattern gen, have good pattern.
Pulled the video card, and dug around a bit. But found a legacy computer, and tested the video card. It's good.
On a whim I decided to try a different slot for the video card. No help.
Have also tried an all clear after everything.

Wonder if I could plug in an award bios and see if I get anything.

How do you perform the "All Clear"?

It looks like there is a Jumper setting on the board marked All Clear

Correct there is a jumper.

So the only thing I can figure at this time, is that there is a second security feature that the game bios os looking for to decrypt the prom.

So I'm kinda stuck at this point until I can find someone that knows a bit about them. I can't be the only one, with one of these machines.
