When I power up the S+ the reels spin and stop right to left - each reel stops on position 1 (at the seam) except for reel #1 - I have move reels around - replaced the MPU and done clears - still not working.  Any ideas other than the motherboard or wiring issues? thanks.

Have you changed reel baskets or reel chip recently?

What game are you running in it?

If it's a game like Red White and Blue where three blanks would be a winning combination, the reels won't line up to "blank blank blank" after a game change -- the first reel will be offset by a symbol so it lines up on a non-winning combination.

Have you tried playing the game to see if the reel really isn't lining up correctly?

never thought of that - it is a RWB type machine - always thought that the game was supposed to start at the 0 position of each reel. thank you.

You might want to check and see if the first reel is a slant top reel also.  waving flag

that was my thought also - but I moved the 2nd reel to the 1st position with the same result - so it sounds like the answer is - that being a RWB the startup procedure aligns the reels on the first blank for each reel - something I was never aware of.
