My friend (Joel) is working on a game/computer project and he just called me and ask me if someone in the forum would know the answer to the following:

"a pin out for connecting mdb 6 pin to rs232"

I hope I wrote it down correctly.  He currently doesn't have internet at his home so I'm playing middleman here.  I always rave about the forum so I'm sure he will join as soon as he gets interent. 

Can anyone help?

By "mdb" - does he mean "motherboard"? or "mudderboard"?  LOL
And "copy pti" - I wish I knew what "pti" is?

Unfortunately, they are mostly 8 or 10 pin connectors on the motherboard,

I'll need the motherboard make and model to figure it out...

I'm not sure why you guys are on the slot machine "motherboard" track -- I'm pretty sure Delma's friend is dealing with a Multidrop bus connection.

Attached is a .pdf file about the protocol from that Wikipedia article.  I don't think it shows how to make an RS-232 connection, but I didn't dig through the whole thing.  Either way, it may be helpful for your friend.

Point taken -- I think I read "game" as something other than a slot machine which probably made a big difference in what I thought she was asking about.

Hi I'm working with Joel.
 
We have a Pyramid Technologies International (PTI) Bill acceptor and we are trying to get it to work with a Pot O Gold. It reads the money and apparantly the pulses are set wrong. 

When contacting PTI they said that we cannot program this BA with the cards that are printable off their website.  Sales/Tech claims we HAVE to use the USB/Serial cable they make and sell.  I am going to use the serial port off my laptop to program the PTI Apex 5200 through the MDB Flash port next to the configuration button on the back of the BA.

I have the serial null cable. (05AA0018)  and I'm going to build the 05AA0011.  I just need the pinout for it.  ie..  serial pin 5 - mdb pin 5, serial pin 2 - mdb 3 or whatever. 

I'm only using the common and Data TX/RX  That's all it needs as far as I can tell. I have the power supplied via the 18-pin I/O on the other side.

I've already pinned it to what it says in the manual for the Apex 5200 MDB (pg 15 Apex Manual) on my custom MDB plug to the standard DB9..... PTI RS232 interface says not connected.  Swapped RX and TX and still no status.  I read that null cables are crosslinked sometimes so I swapped the DB9 ground from 5 to 1 and the TX accordingly.  No avail.

I have the Acceptor Tools and the RS232 interface installed...

and Palm Flash Download Cable; Part Number 05AA0011"

05AA0009 Is the same thing just wrapped different, and data runs through 18-pin instead of MDB.

This is an old thread, but a little info on the MDB port. It does not use standard RS232 signals. Aside from it using a 11 bit protocol (that can be fudged in software), there needs to be some electronics in between. I am fairly certain that the cable shown above has a chip in the housing that does the conversion. I've built RS232 TTL level shifters and stuck them in the RS232 housing shell, so it's not unheard of.  I found this out by trying to get the Apex software to talk to my 5400 BV via RS232 and the MDB port without success. Only after much Googling did I find out about the need for the extra hardware.
