I am thinking about buying a Bally pro 6000 and I understand one of the problems with these machines is the battery going dead if the machine is not left on all the time. I have seen posts of people using a battery bank to make it easy to swap out using AA bateries. My question is, can I install an AC adapter with the same amps and volts by sodering it to the battery leads and just keep the adapter plugged in?

I would imagine so, but you will need a ram clear every time the power flickers.
With that said, I would not do it.

I just replaced a Battery for someone in a Bally S6000 machine that was 1998 dated.  The Bally S5500 did eat batteries a lot faster, but the S6000 doesn't have the same appetite.  The 3.6 power source would need to be DC current, and anytime you have a power loss, you would need to perform a Saferam clear.  I would stick with the battery intended for the machine.

I understand what you are saying with a surge. Would the battery protect it if the adapter was sodered to the leads and the battery was still on the board?

DO NOT DO THAT....... no no no no no no no

The battery is Lithium and will not accept a charge.
Doing so will most likely cause the battery to explode and the resulting fire may burn down your house. Burning Resistor Burning Resistor

Stick to the battery, If you add an adapter to a battery you will charge a battery that may not be designed to be recharged.
Doing so could lead to machine damage and the worst a house fire.

OK, I don't want any fires the wife would throw me and my machines out> What is the best thing to do about the dead battery problem and having to replace batteries and do a ramclear every couple months?  Thanks

In my experience the batteries on my 5500s last about a year to 18 months, tops. This is considered short when compared to the 8 to 15+ years that the batteries in an S+ seem to last. I cannot speak to the battery life on the 6000.

I would suggest using the default battery, but the first time that your battery dies, install a battery holder to simplify future battery changes. The reason that many of us mount the battery holder outside of the board is that when it becomes low, we can swap the battery with the machine powered on, eliminating the need for a clear in most cases.

You could go the UPS style route ........ where facility power constantly charges the battery and the battery feeds the machine. When A/C is lost the battery carries the load.

I would use NIH batteries - not Nicad.

I read this thread and with respect just have to agree with what is written here.......the batteries serve a purpose. You should not defeate that purpose. And just for the record, I had an S+ from 1989 and just had to change the battery on it like a year ago. It was off for a long time.

I would go with the AA battery holder idea. It makes it easy to change the battery, and a Saferam clear is easy to do.  Of course you could buy a game kit from one of the fine people on this site, and when the battery goes dead you can put in a new game when you put in the new battery.  Then it would seem all worthwhile.  Mike
