Backlit Reel Question

I have a Triple Double Strike machine and the lights on the back of my reels are in three rows.  2 lights on the top, 2 lights in the middle, and 2 lights on the bottom.  All 6 lights are working, meaning they are very dimly lit when the game is on.  During a win though, only the 2 lights in the middle get bright.  So when a "7" is on the winning line, the top and bottom of the 7 isn't fully lit.  Anyone know why this might be?  I saw this same game in the casino this weekend and the entire "7" was lit so I know something isn't correct.  Any ideas?

You might need a new backlight controller. I guess I would check harnesses first and if that checks out then get another backlighting control board.

I think it's normal.  Unless you have a game like wild cherry or something else that pays for a symbol above or below the payline the top and bottom row of lights won't illuminate.  That's what I've observed on my S2Ks anyhow, with the exception of haywire which lights them all up when the machine "haywires".

If you have window protectors on the front of the shadow box (the box the bulbs are in) that will do it, some games with many symbols on strips like 5 line games used them to keep from showing other symbols as lit, the covers would be between the reel strip and bulb, and just pop off the shadow box (if they are there)

Not that this is the problem but another way this happens is when
a set of backlit slant top reels are installed into a upright machine
there is a set screw on the right side of the reel one for slant the other for upright
if it's set for slant the symbol will not get the correct aim of the light.
The dead give away is the sticker on the bottom front of the reel being upside down
unless of course the sticker is missing.

No I can actually see the lights by looking sideways at the reels while they spin.  The only lights that get brighter are the middle row during a win.
