Fruit machine my tail feathers !!

« on: July 26, 2010, 09:36:26 PM »

I just received a "Double Diamond Deluxe - Bonus wheel". My S2000 is nice and quiet, but the Vision is kinda noisy. Not something is wrong noisy, just fan noisy. Is there a replacement fan that is quieter specific for the Vision series, or will I be able to go to NewEgg and buy a low noise computer fan?

 thanks - Dorothy

Is there black cigarette gunk all over the fan?
Probably just needs a cleaning.
I think it comes out with a few screws.
Put a drop of sewing machine oil on the shaft and
let the unit dry completely before re-installing.

as long as the voltage is correct, the size is the same, and you don't mind putting the correct connector on, anything you get should be ok.  you could check Happ for an exact replacement to eliminate installing the connector but you'll pay for it.  yours may be noisy simply because it is worn out, the vision series was produced a few years back so the machine probably ran on a casino floor for 3-6 years nonstop.  g/l!

I agree with kforeman's reply!  Me, too!
I would like to add though, save the connectors.
IF you can take it out and post a very good cl;ear photo of the fan and give us all the
details (size, voltage) I can try an internet search for you and
see if I can come up with something suitable.
Personally I do not own a Vision machine and I don't know the exact specifications of the said fan.
I will see if I can locate the specs somewhere and we can take it from after you've tried some cleaning.
I warn you though - that thing may be very, very filthy and I advise you to wear
a  comeplete radiation suit complete with goggles and respiration gear
when attempting to remove it from the machine...

If you cut off the connector from the original and leave some extra wire, you can solder (splice) the old connector onto the new fan wires and tape them. You might also be able to remove the pins from the connector and attach them to the new fan's wires if you have the tools. Then there would be no need for a splice.

If you measure the the fan, you'll probably find that it's a standard size. Just make sure that the voltage is the same, as kforeman said. yes

Tape....TAPE!!!   This is the 21st century...Heat Shrink tubing.....
And yes, my Visions I had had in the past did indeed sound like an Electrolux Cannister Vacuum......
Roller bearing fans do indeed "Whine", but they last forever. Sleeve bearing units are quieter..but dont last as long.

When I bought my first poker machine, the fan was crazy noisy.  When I pulled everything apart and started to clean it, I couldn't believe what the fan looked like.  It seriously looked like a brown furry rodent crawled into it and died and I'm surprised it was even running due to the heat being generated.  I pulled it out and sprayed loads of Simple Green on it, scrubbed it several times with a toothbrush, and ran it under scalding hot water.  I let it dry for 24 hours and oiled it as Bunker described above.  Next day, couldn't believe it was the same fan.

Here's a tip you might want to consider with regards to keeping your top box cooler and running for years to come.  Visions are out of production and the LCD top box replacements are and will be harder and harder to come by.

Take a moment and study the top box with the machine running.  After you take the glass off, hinge open the top box and put your hand on the top and bottom of the metal frame....it's pretty warm!!!  Study it for a moment...there is just a small open to the right that lets air in, then just a small fan to the left (this is from viewing the rear side).  This is not good air circulation and I have seen many of these with overheated (discolored) and burned up chips, resistors, etc.  My advice to anyone with a Vision is to completely remove the rear metal panel off the back of the box and take it right out of the machine.  It will then receive the benefit of the entire top boxes air circulation.  Test it out and see for yourself....after it's been opened up and running for 15 minutes but you hands on the frame again...you will see it is much cooler.  To remove the panel, unscrew the set screens on the right side (when viewing from the rear), bottom, and back.  Then pull the panel off from the right, you will see it comes right off.  A final note here....once removed, if for any reason you are in the top box, maybe changing out a bulb, take some simple antistatic precautions as you don't want to zap the exposed board.

Visions are great machines...have fun.

Thanks men for taking the time for all your suggestions.

I think the first and easiest thing to do is to clean and lubricate the fan motor and see what that does to reduce the noise. After looking at the cabinet I really have to agree with Bettor, the vents are really bitty and I don't see how they can be very functional for heat reduction. If cleaning doesn't do the job maybe a different fan along with removing the back of the cabinet is the best thing to do. The only draw back I can picture from that is there will be a lot of light on the wall behind the machine.

Again - Thanks - Dorothy

UH......I think you took this "Out of Context"
He means "Take the back of the DISPLAY off, not the back of the machine.
He is correct, the vision DISPLAY unit does have a rather large thick metal back cover you can remove. This box has a ONE INCH in diameter fan thats supposed to move air thru the box.
I have the one in my 5 reel Mata-Hari removed for that very reason....

D,

Here's a couple of pics for you.  The first picture is what it looks like once you remove the panel if your top box does not have the LED light ring on the front.  The second picture has the light ring control panel that I rigged and hung off the back.  Note, take some antistatic precautions by touching the metal frame to ground yourself before reaching inside.  After you remove your rear panel you will be in shock at how dirty it is (please post a pic of yours near the fan for everyone's enjoyment - I don't have a dirty one to show off at the moment).  If you have an air compressor or can pick up a can of compressed air, it's a really good idea to blow all the crap out of there.  Also carefully remove the fan and vacuum it.  Be careful with it as the fins on the fan will be brittle from the heat it has endured over the years.

Good luck,

Jim

I can't remember if your game title has a LED light ring on the front around the LCD.  The first pic below has the light ring and the second pic does not.

Bettor

Thanks for the pix. They say a picture is worth a 1000 words. In this case it is worth at least that.

There is no light ring on the DDD Bonus Wheel. It is black as my coffee.

I took a look and how to get inside the top and it has eluded me. I opened the door. Removed the plastic cover where the slot club card used to be and expected to find a lever or something. All I saw were Phillips head screws that would remove a bracket holding in the glass. I can see from the picture you posted that - that is the wrong way to access the top area. It is a square top Vision, incase there is a difference between square and round.

A friend of mind once got an "F" in philosophy class for answering the question "What is philosophy?" - His answer was "Complication of the obvious." I am beginning to think slot machines subscribe to this as well.

Anyways, yeah! - you're gonna learn a lot about the Vision platform as you progress from fix to fix.
At the same time, we will all benefit from these posts and learn more about the Visions as well!
Vision owners love their machines...

D,

Nothing is obvious on these machines until you do it for the first time.  Many of the machines I sell to first time buyers...the first question I usually get is "uhhh...how do I get my money out?".

Now that you have the top glass out...leave those screws alone on the front that you are looking at.  Study for a moment how the LCD top box is sitting within a metal frame that is bolted to the top box below.  On the right side of the metal box you will notice a piano hinge.  On the left side of the box is a round knob.  With your left hand pull out and to the left on the knob and at the same time with your right hand grasp the top of the LCD frame and pull out.  It will hinge open.  CAUTION.  Pull out slowly as the harnesses that dangle from behind will tear against the metal frame below.  Best method is to pull slowly with your right hand and reach under and behind with your left to lift the wires as you pull all the way out.  Once hinged open 90 degrees you can now see the back cover of the box.  This is what you want to remove.  There are 2 screws on the right side of the box (when viewing from behind), 2 underneath, and several on the back.  You will know you have the correct screws because that are flat head flush with the metal box.  There are then a few screws on the back that need to be removed as well.  It's a good idea at this point to unplug temporarily the harnesses you see plugged into the back of the box.  Grasp the top of the box with your left hand and put your right fingers into the vent opening on the bottom right and pull straight out and the panel should pop off.  It takes a little force, but if it seems like too much then you have missed a screw somewhere.  Again, take anti-static precautions once you get it opened up.  Get ready for a surprise for what you see inside....yuck.

Mission accomplished !

I didn't realize that the glass lifted p and tilted out for removal. Once I put two and two together it was easy.

There was only one screw holding the metal back case to the LCD. Two careful seconds later it was off. It wasn't too bad in there. From your warning I was half expecting spiders and wolley-buggers. I will get a can of air (for the machine - not my head) for the dust and a little Windex to clean off the lights a little.

Thanks for the hand holding.

Okay I got the fan out and cleaned up. The hardest part was finding the right sized socket in my tool drawer. Someone suggested a HazMat suit. Boy were they right. I haven't seen that much yuck since I looked under my step son's bed. It is now all nice and clean and reinstalled with the glass off. I'll wait until tomorrow before powering it back on. I squirted it really well with air before putting it back, but 24 hours waiting is probably the best thing to do.

Is there a gasket the goes between the fan and the case. The nuts are tight and the bracket is seated, but the fan motor has a little gap between itself and the top. The gap is maybe a paper match's thickness and the fan is secure in the bracket, it is just a little loose.

Here are before and afters, I need to go shower now.

Yeah, that's the same Nidec TA300DC fan that I have in my Game King.  Mine was filthy and I soaped it, scrubbed it, ran it under hot water, and oiled it.  24 hours is plenty of time, although I left mine out in the sun.

I would suggest a piece of rubber bicycle tubing cut to fit the 4 holes and fan hole.
The rubber will act kill 2 birds with one stone.
The soft rubber will act as a spacer to give slightly more fan clearance AND
act as a shock absorber so it wont use the metal cabinet as a bass drum sound amplifier....lol
It should run much quieter w/the rubber.
