I have this problem that bugs the S**t out of me, and that is which side of a machine is the right side and which is the left side.  I think we can all agree which is the front and where the back of the machine is. To me the door hinge side of a upright machine is the right side, and the door latch is the left side.

Let me use a example, take a car with standard left hand steering, I think we can all agree the passanger side of that car is the right  side and the drivers side is the left side. OK same car, if I'm facing the front of it, is the drivers side still the left side of the car ?  I think we will all agree it is, so why is a slot machine any different ??

This isn't one of me sick jokes, I discussed this with Stat Freak about a year ago and he told me I'm all F/U ( nothing new there, I've know that for years ) When I read a post and someone says the MPU in a S 2000 is on the left side of the machine it isn't, it's on the right side. The change button may be on your left but it's still the right hand side of a machine !!

We can't get inside a machine....handles on the right side, MPUs on the left...If we could get inside, like a car, then it would be flipped...

If the slot machine was "alive" (which is kind of is, when activated) then, from the machines point of view, the handle and/or latch would be on the left side and the hinge would be on "its" right side.

I agree with you Buzz from a logical standpoint, but when dealing with clients on the phone trying explain where to look for something I follow Stat's way of looking at things.

Just ask any old lady in a casino which side the handles on and she'll tell you.......it's on the right side!!  Next time I have a customer on the phone, I'm gonna tell them to put their back to their machine, and now open the door, the latch is on the left side!! It's hard enough to get some customers to remember their left and their right, I wouldn't even try to explain the machines left and right to them!!  :72-

Typically I will says "the right/left side as you are looking at it."

It is better to say left hand side and right hand side rather than left side/right side.


Whenever someone is trying to confirm with me by saying, "Left side?", I answer, "right!"  :72-

According to my Bally Proslot 6000 manual the audit key switch is on the right side of machine.  Soooo Bally determines left/right  base on you looking at the Machine.  Page 2-13 if you want to  look at your Bally manual.

Just like pinball machines and other arcades or amusement devices, Left and Right is determined as you are looking at the machine..(IE: Left hand flipper is on the left side of the machine).... Unless your dyslexic or is that cixelsyd :208-

Left and right sides are always is reference to a living beings perspective,  not an objects perspective.  You would not say the Name and Avatars on this web page are on the right side of the screen would you?
With auto's, standard is "Driver Side" or "Passenger Side" to avoid confusion. 

The exception is with stages...IE...Stage left if the left side of the stage when you are facing the stage. Even if you are on stage facing the audience it is still the same. It would then actually be on your right.

Buzz, I see your point and to some degree agree with you. My history is in the automotive business and all references to right , left, front and back are from the drivers seat. Drivers side on a standard american vehicle being the left side as viewed from the drivers seat. Now when it comes to the machine there is the argument of is the player the driver or is the machine the driver?? As I see it the player is the pedestrian getting run over by the machine so the hinge is the right side.

I always refer to it as the East side and the West side.  ;)

The standard for vehicles and machines is from the operators position.
 That is behind the steering wheel or in front of the machine.

Ok, so the door hinge is on the left correct? But wait, I have the door open and am looking at the inside of it from the "operators position". So now the hinge is on the right.  :88-

good post MIKE . As i posted earlier . I agree with the makers of the machines . If they say the handle is on the players RIGHT it must be so . If the machine is playing by itself then that is a different story as its perspective would be the same as a person.

As someone who was involved with theater for many years, I have to correct this; the whole reason behind calling it "stage left" and "stage right" is that you're designating the direction as viewed from the stage. As viewed from the audience, it's called "house left" and "house right". House left = stage right and vice versa.

Upstage is the back of the stage, down stage is the front, and the term "upstaged" comes from an actor moving towards the rear of the stage, which forces the other actor(s) to face away from the audience. This puts the audience's attention squarely on the actor that moved upstage, since that's the only player whose face can be seen.  :89-

I was competing in a sailing Regatta at Kingston, Ontario in the 90's trying to qualify for a spot on the Olympic racing team
and there was over 102 Laser dinghy's rounding the leeward mark!
Not one boat touched each other!
You'd hear the guys yelling "Starboard!" and hear the leeward boats tacking like nuts!
It was exciting as hell !!!
You should see the mass clusterf**k behind the starting line just before the cannon goes off with all the competitors jockeying for position!!

When facing the machine with the door closed - the handle is on the right.
When the door is open, the S2000 MPU is on the left side of the cabinet.

But ...when looking at an opened door, the coin mechanism is towards the latch side of the door
and the I/O cards are towards the hinge side of the door.

Now that you brought it up. Just about every slot machine I've seen there is what I call the inner door panel. Which side of this panel is the front ? The side closest to the belly glass, or the side closest to you when the door is open ??? ( No fair cutting the door stop cable )

As I recall, my opinion at the time – and that's all it was – was that if one were to draw plans for a machine that Buzz might be correct, but that from a practical standpoint almost everyone in the real world would call the handle side the right side and so it made sense to do so when discussing machines to prevent confusion.

Kirk  True story, 4 or 5 years ago I bobtailed ( no trailer ) up to Billings MT to get a permit load ( I didn't have the required permit for any of the 4 States I went into. ) This silo was 10" 6" wide and they told me it was 14' 10" high. ( 14' is legal. )  I didn't measure it as I didn't have a ladder so I could get up on top. It's a long story about blowing two tires side by side and the Cop stopping and the tire guy driving 150 miles to replace the tires. Later I'm South bound on I 15 about midnight, somewhere around Pocatello ID going about 60 MPH with NO warning signs before a bridge I see a sign on the bridge "15 Feet High" I want to tell you, if at 60 MPH at night and you see the sign on the bridge, it's to F***ing late to hit the brakes. I don't know if it hit the bridge or not, I didn't hear it hit and I damn well didn't stop and do a inspection either.

Driving slower doesn't make the bridge any higher ....

My cousin was a caption  in the Pontiac mi fire Dept. .  They had a fire run and the main  road was closed  due to repairing a water main break . The other road was backed up by a train unloading cars . So they went a way that they never use because of a old lower bridge . My cousin  said I think the truck is to
